The popular “farm to table” concept urges us to eat more of the foods that are grown and raised on our doorsteps. Local kids experienced exactly that luxury on Wednesday, although it probably would better have been described as “ranch to cafeteria”. Amy Pravecek, Sheryl Klocker and Criss Neiman, representing the Crook County CattleWomen, arrived just before the lunch bell to see the delicious hot beef sandwiches that had been prepared with locally grown meat. The beef for the program is donated...
Questions were raised over the viability of plans to build a new clinic in Hulett at last week’s meeting of the Crook County Medical Services District Board of Trustees. Split opinions caused disagreements on the need for a new clinic and the board’s relationship with the Crook County Hospital Foundation. As the meeting began, Judy Hutchinson, on behalf of the foundation, handed out up-to-date copies of the proposal for the clinic, which is planned at around 8000 square feet. When asked about projected cost, Hutchinson said, “don’t know ye...
The Sundance High School band and choir will be hosting a program of music and poetry on Veteran’s Day and the community is invited to attend in honor of our local veterans. “We would love to see the community, and especially the veterans, in attendance,” says Teresa Preisner, music teacher. “I look at this as not so much a concert for the kids as a program for the community.” In recent years, Preisner says, the Veteran’s Day concert has not been themed towards veterans. “This year will be very traditional and will be in recognition o...
Students, parents and teachers were recently asked to complete a survey looking at the climate and culture within Crook County School District. Not only was this an opportunity to find problem areas, says Superintendent Mark Broderson, it was part of an overall push to spread kindness and improve the general atmosphere across the district. “The leadership team had a retreat last May and we tried to figure out what was the direction we wanted to focus on,” he says. “We chose to focus on creating a positive climate and making our buildings a pla...

The ladies of the Crook County Courthouse never disappoint at Halloween. This year, they dressed as Trolls for the spookiest day - even the ones who cheated just a little. Visitors to the courthouse may have felt the need to rub their eyes while walking down the corridor to the County Clerk’s Office. From that perspective, all that was visible of the bright costumes were green and pink puffs of hair behind the counter....

The Christmas season sees more gifts bought than any other, but how much of that spending is happening in our local stores? Sundance State Bank and the Sundance Times are jointly launching a challenge this year that will aim to visibly demonstrate the impact of shopping local on the health of our town’s local businesses. Inspired by a similar event running in communities across the southern part of Wyoming, the challenge is simple: we are asking all our readers to set aside $100 of your Christmas shopping budget that you would otherwise have s...

1 Years Ago The Times November 5, 1919 R.O. Partlow, local weather man, reports the total snowfall for the month of October as 18-1/2 inches. The lowest temperature was zero, recorded on the 26th, and the month as a whole was unusually rough but not severe. S. It’s tough to know people are watching your every move; it’s difficult to make decisions that you know will please some more than others. But when you’re dealing with the public’s money, there’s nothing more important than being open about what you’re doing with it. For that reason, we would like to offer our sincere appreciation to Joey Kanode of the Crook County Medical Services District for his insistence that the Board of Trustees keeps its work as transparent as legally possible. As reported in last week’s issue, Kanode raised concer...

Twenty-three “stakeholders” from the community, staff, board, etc., took part in the meeting. Contrary to the stereotype of a young British girl, I did not grow up wanting to be a princess. I imagined it would be a dull existence unsuited to my life ambitions. It would be a different story if I had developed an early interest in fascinators, dresses and shoes, but I’m still not good at those things. I wanted to be a starfighter pilot on the Battlestar Galactica or dodging mortar shells as I reported the news from warzones, like pioneering journalist Kate Adie. These things are c...

The Upton-Sundance football team began playoffs on Friday hosting Rocky Mountain.
