1 Years Ago November 1, 1923 With the increasing snow since last week, the Upton stage has reverted to the old standby and left with a team Monday. Roads are fast becoming unnavigable for motors in this section. It is stated that the Smead hotel at Lead City will be wrecked and torn down to make way for operations of the mine. It was built only twenty years ago, but open cut operations of the mine have encroached on the hotel site. A large portion of the city of Lead is really directly over...
Wyoming Game and Fish is asking residents to properly dispose of pumpkins instead of leaving them out for wildlife to eat. While it may seem harmless to leave pumpkins out, it is quite the opposite, especially for mule deer whose digestive system cannot process unnatural foods. This often leads to sick animals. Additionally, pumpkins left outside can attract scavenging animals, from raccoons to bears. “This time of year we get many calls about sickly deer fawns and much of this can be attributed to these deer eating foods that offer little nutr...

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in response to the letter to the editor that James Geis wrote in the October 26th edition of the Sundance Times. I guess I am a little confused. The rules from DEQ for land application for septic systems waste were adopted by Crook County in 2018, so for almost six years, how has the waste that has been pumped been disposed of if it was not legally land applied on the landowner’s property, and if it was not hauled to a legal disposal site? If the rules for land application for septic system waste have b...
We don’t need to worry about warm weather any more, so my thoughts have turned to the kind of comforting meal that cheers up a gray day – and what better option than soup? While creams of chicken and tomato, noodle-based soups and the various potato-based delights we all love are shared between our nations, this made me wonder if my homeland has chosen any of our offerings as a national soup, which I could then offer up to you as something new to try. The answer turned out to be “sort of”....
CHEYENNE — Will potential voters be required to live in Wyoming for at least 30 days in order to vote? Do people need to register as a PAC if they spend more than $1000 in an election? After some heavy deliberation Thursday, members of the Legislature’s Joint Corporations, Elections and Political Subdivisions Committee advanced bill drafts that could create significant changes to existing Wyoming election laws. 30-day residency requirement Legislators forwarded a bill to next year’s budget session that, as written, would add a 30-day resid...
Hightman drops Supreme Court appeal GILLETTE (WNE) — A Gillette man serving prison time for stealing from his fiancée – who remains missing – in the days and weeks after she was last seen, has backed out of his appeal filed with the Wyoming Supreme Court. Nathan J. Hightman, 40, filed his intent to appeal less than two weeks after receiving a three- to six-year prison sentence — along with fines, restitution and probation — in June. The motion to waive his appeal was filed last week, as Hightman decided not to move forward after weighing his op...
An analysis of wolverines in Wyoming and the rest of their Lower 48 range paints a grim picture of a low-density species that’s losing its habitat and facing an uncertain future. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a 100-page “species status assessment” for North American wolverines in late September. That document presages a final determination that federal wildlife managers must make by late November to satisfy a May 2022 federal court order. The assessment’s closing paragra...
Gumbo isn’t that just Jambalaya? Gumbo is not the same as Jambalaya, the main difference is the use of rice in each dish. Gumbo is a soup or stew over rice while Jambalaya is cooked with the rice in the dish. Gumbo should be less rice than liquid and Jambalaya should not be mushy or liquid. Gumbo is a Cajun and Creole specialty throughout the state of Louisiana. Gumbo is a stew made from seafood, meat or vegetables that is served over hot rice. It can be made thicker with okra, filé or a roux. The best part about Gumbo is that it can be ma...
