    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 26, 2019

The trappings of fall will be on full display next weekend at the annual Sundance Pumpkin Patch festival, an opportunity for adults to pick out the perfect squash while the kids enjoy cider, carnival games and wagon rides. All the usual favorites will be available, says organizer Joni Spaulding. “This year, we will also have a cider press, you can bring your own apples and he will press them for you,” she says of the festival’s newest attraction. “He’s even going to stay later if people still have apples that need pressed. It will be a free cu...

  • School district scores high on annual assessments

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 26, 2019

chool in Crook County is meeting the Wyoming Department of Education’s performance expectations – or, in the case of Moorcroft High School (MHS), exceeding them. This being the second year of WY-TOPP assessments, overwhelmingly positive test results for 2018-19 have also given Crook County School District insight into improvements that have been made over the last year, says Superintendent Mark Broderson, and the hard work of the staff “Every building showed improvement and showed growth, which is exactly what you want,” says Broderson of the...

  • Volunteers needed for new war memorial committee

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 26, 2019

Volunteers are needed from all parts of the county to serve on the reorganized Crook County Veterans’ Memorial Committee. The committee is responsible for reviewing applications for names that will be added to the memorial on the county courthouse lawn. The committee vets the names submitted, which are then added to the memorial on an annual basis, usually in August. • Hunting outlook: good

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 26, 2019

Hunting season is upon us once again and Game Warden Chris Teter is confident it’s going to be a good one. Despite a few potential issues for those who don’t have access to private land, he says, populations are generally high and the opportunities should be broad. Elk Elk season will be something of a mixed bag this year, Teter says, depending on where you plan to hunt. “Hunters who have good access to the private land where the majority of the elk are have being doing fairly well, while public land hunters are going to have a little bit l...

  • Black Hills Cowboy Church breaks ground

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 26, 2019

Just off the interstate near Beulah, a parcel of land began a transformation at the weekend from old arena to new place of worship. Pastor Tom Karp hopes that Black Hills Cowboy Church will be open for business by the end of year, combining church services with roping, barrel racing and skeet shooting. “All of our ministries are either arena based – team roping, barrel racing, horse training, all of those kinds of things – or outdoor ministries, so skeet shooting, archery, trail rides,” Karp say...

  • Second goat show even more popular

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 26, 2019

It wouldn’t be possible without support from the community, says Tanja Miller of Alpenthal’s Dairy Goats, who organized the Black Hills Dairy Goat Association’s Dairy Goat Show at the fairgrounds over the weekend. This was the second year Crook County hosted its own goat show and, says Miller, numbers were up considerably. “We were bigger this year than last year,” she says. “We had 240 goats and we have two rings, so we actually show 480 animals in less than 12 hours – on top of four showmans...

  • Chapel of Faith

    Sep 26, 2019

I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. Romans 16:19 Simple is a good word and can take us far. In the context of Romans 16:19 it conveys the meaning of innocence, unmixed and pure as in wine or metal. This simple, pure innocence holds what is good and plainly see what is bad. It is the result of the wisdom of good embracing the totality of evil. Life is straightforward if only we are sensible enough to realize that good and evil must be kept separate. Simplicity (the return to innocence) begins with the repentance of...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Sep 26, 2019

Dear Editor: Although it has been four years since we moved to Crook County, we recently attended our first Sundance High School football game. We were not prepared for what we experienced. Expecting the typical field rivalry and friction, attitudes and social drama among students and intense, aggressive players, we found none of this. The U.S. Patriots showed exemplary sportsmanship toward the Lusk team, obviously cultured by good coaching and school leadership. The students that we observed, sat among and socialized with were all cheerful,...

  • Government needs to reunite savings bonds with rightful owners

    Curt Meier, Wyoming State Treasurer|Sep 26, 2019

During my time as Treasurer, I have seen thousands of individuals across the State of Wyoming locate money being held by our Unclaimed Property Division. Some of these checks have been in the six-figure range, and the rightful owner may not have ever been paid if not for the Unified Unclaimed Property laws in our great state. I have seen first-hand how effective this program can be, yet our federal government doesn’t want to turn over nearly $26 billion in savings bonds (an estimated $45 million belonging to Wyomingites) that have reached m...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 26, 2019

I suspect my pups will be downright distraught when we reach the end of this summer of long walks on green grass – but I can tell you for sure who won’t be. There’s a herd of squirrels in my back yard that is quickly evolving into an angry mob, and I’m worried about their nuts. I should probably start from the beginning. As we all know, I have a storied history with bushy-tailed varmints, both here and back in the homeland. I have loved them since I was a teenager in chocolate-brown trouser...
