  • County under fire ban

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 19, 2019

The rains of early summer having left Crook County with plenty of fuel, the potential dry conditions of fall have led County Fire Warden Doug Leis to call for full burn restrictions. The ban, which went into effect this week, is intended to prevent a situation that over-extends our local firefighting capability. During the ban, fireworks will be prohibited, as are trash, refuse, camp and charcoal fires within the unincorporated areas of the county. Petroleum stoves, lanterns and heating devices may only be used if they meet the fire...

  • Leis named fire warden

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 19, 2019

Firefighting has been a lifelong passion for Crook County’s new Fire Warden, Doug Leis. “My dad was a volunteer firefighter when I was a kid growing up, I hung out there with those guys back home in Wisconsin and became a firefighter there before I moved out here,” he says. “The first ten years, I was in Gillette and I wasn’t on the fire department, but when I moved to Moorcroft, I got to know the guys over there and I’d been there probably about a year when I found out when one of their meeti...

  • Pizza party

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 19, 2019

The fourth grade kids were treated to a pizza lunch on Tuesday using ingredients they planted themselves in the hoop house at the fairgrounds. Under the direction of 4-H Educator Sara Fleenor and Beth Ellsbury, they harvested tomatoes, onions, basil and peppers. Once the hive of excited activity died down and the bowls were filled with vegetables (and everyone was sure the basil was really basil), Fleenor showed the kids how to harvest wheat. All ingredients gathered, each one was carefully...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Sep 19, 2019

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in an effort to end the stigma that people suffering from mental health illnesses are dangerously violent and unpredictable. According to Mentalhealth.gov, “The vast majority of people with mental health problems are no more likely to be violent than anyone else. Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3 to 5 percent of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. “In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be vic...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 19, 2019

It’s the little things that get you when it comes to cultural differences, and the topics on which you know just about enough to be dangerous. The husband and I thought we were talking the same language when it came to the renovation of our bedroom – but we absolutely weren’t. When I say I know enough to be dangerous, I am referring to two things. Firstly, I know very little about construction. Secondly, what I do know is based on an industry with different climate needs, culture, history and a...
