  • Drought creeps back into county

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 8, 2022

The drought conditions that have plagued Crook County over the last couple of years have largely lifted, but the latest climate reports show this region creeping slowly back towards dry conditions. The good news is that the drought conditions are considerably less severe at this time and have the potential to resolve for most of the county within the next few weeks. The northeastern corner of the county is now listed as experiencing moderate drought conditions, while the rest of the county is...

  • County gains new voters

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 8, 2022

The number of registered voters in Crook County took a significant leap upwards this year, according to the official tallies from August’s primary election. Crook County had 4103 registered voters in total at the 2018 primary, a number that grew only modestly to 4143 by the 2020 general election. This year, on the other hand, 4558 people were registered to vote in the county on election day – an increase of 415 people, or 10%. On election day itself, Crook County gained 205 new voters. Unsurprisingly, the number of ballots that were cast for...

  • CCMSD hopes record system switch will increase efficiency

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 8, 2022

No longer willing to struggle with an electronic medical records (EMR) system that Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) employees have precious little liking for, the district has undertaken an extensive vetting process to replace it. It’s all in the name of patient safety and efficiency, according to Wesley Davis, DNP, who led the EMR selection steering committee. Davis gave a presentation to the board of trustees last week after a ten-month process during which the committee was able to whittle its options down to a single f...

There is no longer an area closure in place for the safety of the public. However, the Forest Service has asked that members of the public use extreme caution in the vicinity of the fire due to the dangerous conditions that still exist, which includes dead standing trees that could fall at any time. The human-caused fire, located seven miles south of Sundance, was reported on the morning of July 31. It had grown...

  • Correction

    Sep 8, 2022

In last week’s article listing the candidates for district seats at the upcoming general, we incorrectly placed one candidate for the hospital board in the wrong category. The correct information for Crook County Medical Services District Board of Trustees is as follows: Three trustee seats will be available, one for Hulett (unexpired two-year term) and two at-large, both of which will serve a four-year term. Bob Richey will stand for the Hulett seat. Candidates for the at-large seats include Sandy Neiman, Brent Fowler and Mark K...

  • Write-ins will likely fill pair of district seats this election

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 8, 2022

With a couple of seats on district boards lacking candidates for the general election, County Clerk Melissa Jones would like to ensure voters are aware that write-ins work differently to the primary election, but are still a valid way to make your choices known. Jones says she was prompted to give voters a reminder after she was asked how many write-in votes a potential board member would need at the general election. “For the museum district, for example, there are only two people running and there are three spots,” she says. The answer, she...

  • Old Settlers' Picnic planned for Sept. 25

    Sep 8, 2022

A place takes on meaning for people when they become attached to it. The sights, sounds and smells make a powerful imprint on our memories; they help us connect to an area. We develop a sense of place based on our experiences, and the shared culture and folklore associated with those experiences. Many residents of the Black Hills region identify with Devils Tower because of the sense of place that has been cultivated by using the land as a gathering spot for many generations. Modern gatherings...
