  • Shaping up the square

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

The project to create Sundance Square park adjacent to the building began to take shape this week, however, as contractors Ainsworth Benning moved in to begin the dirt work. However, Old Stoney itself is still waiting for that long-anticipated moment when the doors can be flung open to reveal the cultural treasures inside. Following an inspection last week, the state fire marshal’s office was unfortunately not able to grant an occupancy certificate. The certificate must be obtained before the fi...

  • Bid for new hospital put on hold

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

A grant application to purchase new ambulances for Crook County Medical Services District is moving forward, the board of trustees heard on Friday. However, things aren’t looking good for the district’s efforts to utilize that same CARES Act funding to replace or remodel the hospital. The federal guidance on how CARES Act funding can be spent has been a source of confusion since it was first given to Wyoming. According to Kara Ellsbury, attorney for the board, a conversation with the Attorney General’s Office has shed light on whether the d...

  • HMS brings second lawsuit against CCMSD

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

Health Management Service (HMS) has filed a second lawsuit against Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD). The new filing once again claims that the company, which managed the district for several years, is still owed payment for its services after the sudden termination of its contract. The complaint claims that CCMSD retained HMS’s management services for five years, with the end date set at September 30, 2020. The agreed management fee was equal to 5% of the total gross operating revenue of the district’s facilities. On April 15,...

  • Record absentee votes recorded

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

An extra pile of absentee ballots was almost a given at this year’s elections, thanks to the ongoing pandemic creating concern for those who are more vulnerable to COVID-19 to visit their polling station in person. The actual number of absentee ballots received for the primary elections, however, was record-breaking. The number of absentee ballots requested for the primary was 908. Of those, 827 were then returned to be counted. “That was a 91% turnout on our absentees,” says County Clerk Linda Fritz. In 2016, the biggest elections in recen...

  • Election results now official

    Aug 27, 2020

The unofficial results from last week’s primary have now become official, says County Clerk Linda Fritz. The canvas board met on Friday to verify the ballots and found there were no changes to the winning candidates as announced on the night of the election. Only one race was close enough to warrant an automatic recount: the Republican precinct committeewoman seat for precinct 14-14 Hulett Inside. This was necessary because there was a less than 1% difference between the votes received by the two candidates. Following a hand recount, the w...

  • Bigger, better and coming soon

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

Within the next few months, a new building will appear on the lot of Grossenburg Implement to replace the 40-year-old structure that has been a fixture of Sundance’s business district for 40 years. It’s a necessary move, says manager Will Yemington, because there’s a lot more to the company these days than there was when the building went up. “We’ve outgrown it,” he says. Over the last few decades, equipment has gotten bigger, the business has taken on more work and more customers and more pa...

  • Lyons appointed permanent CEO

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

Micki Lyons has agreed to become the permanent CEO of Crook County Medical Services District. This decision was made by the board of trustees on Friday after seeing Lyons in action as interim CEO over the last four months. “I believe that we’re in a position where we need to transition…from an interim CEO to a permanent CEO in the district and my feeling is that we have the right person in the right slot right now for the district,” said Chairman Mark Erickson as he made the suggestion. Erickson stated that he feels the district’s financial...

  • County to get broadband funding…

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

When the state awarded funds to be increase broadband in underserved areas, making use of CARES Act funding to create the Connect Wyoming initiative, Crook County had high hopes it would be among the beneficiaries. But while two local projects did get the green light, it wasn’t nearly at the scale the county commission had been hoping for. “We recently put out a request for proposals to obtain broadband service in the unserved areas of northeastern Crook County,” explains Commissioner Jeanne Whalen, who set out to investigate what became of th...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 27, 2020

I feel the need to defend my people, for the entire planet is currently mocking our relationship with the humblest of pantry ingredients: rice. I knew I’d stepped into a parallel world when I moved to Wyoming – a place where everything is just different enough to be confusing – but every so often something still stops me in my tracks. There’s a video doing the rounds of the internet by a Malaysian comedian called Nigel Ng, who lives in London and goes by the persona of “Uncle Roger”. I...

  • The big hurt

    Aug 27, 2020

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor. 13:13 Extending love is an adventure that all who walk this earth participate. Willing or unwilling this trip is either hesitant or reckless, as the initiator is compelled to things or others by a curiosity that is inherent. To love and be loved is something we were created to do and to ignore, hide or deny this absolute of living is an excursion into loneliness. To possess or be the object of love is both rewarding and dangerous. It can leave a big hurt,...

GILLETTE — Campbell County Commissioners will not adopt a resolution against the state’s coronavirus public health orders. At a directors meeting Monday, Commissioners Del Shelstad and Colleen Faber said they had received questions from residents about whether Campbell County would pass a resolution against government overreach similar to what has been done in other communities. The city of Sheridan adopted a resolution July 20 “declaring all legal businesses and personnel in the city as essential.” The resolution was necessary “for the purpose...

  • Card of Thanks

    Aug 27, 2020

Thank You I would like to make a public thanks to CCMSD Sundance’s hospital, for saving my husband Raymond’s life in the “wee hours” of the night. Special thanks to Dr. Heith Waddell, MD and two great nurses (forgot names) especially the one who gave me the chamomile tea for my nerves! We need to stop all the bickering and complaining on CCMSD hospital board. In the past 35 years we’ve lived here, countless lives have been saved by the ER/hospital because we are so rural! Also, a good word to Dr. James Larson, MD, a great doctor as well! Psa...
