For the past few years, a sizeable group of members from the Iron Order Motorcycle Club has spent time enjoying the community of Crook County around rally time – and they like to give a little something back in return. It's not difficult to tell that Rally is upon us, bringing with it an estimated 500,000 attendees to the area. Plenty of those visiting motorcycles were already lining the streets of Sundance as the week began. The traditional day for visiting this area is, of course, Wyoming Wednesday, but plenty of visitors were enjoying scenic drives ahead of time. James Lee Hacker, 81, of Moorcroft, Wyoming passed away peacefully at Crook County Long Term Care in Sundance, Wyoming on August, 2, 2024. James was born on January 1, 1943. His parents, Robert and Mary Hacker raised Jim and his brother Jerry, in Cedar Lake, Indiana. Growing up the brothers were best of friends and even enlisted in the United States Navy together in 1966. Jim was extremely proud to be a veteran and serve his country until 1970. Lavern Sell passed away August 3, 2024, at the age of 92. Lavern was born November 25, 1931, in Wagner, South Dakota to Clarence and Katherine Sell. He grew up on a ranch near Keya Paha, South Dakota. He was the third of nine brothers and sisters. Lavern married Wanda Crawford on June 8, 1955, near Clearfield, South Dakota. They had four children, Waneta Sell, Linda (Todd) Spath, Lamoine (Mary) Sell and Lonnie Sell. Lavern owned the Standard Station in Sundance, Wyoming, in the late ’50s. The first reported local fatal accident of this year’s rally took place on Thursday near Hulett, claiming the life of 18-year-old Gina Schaffer of Minnesota. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the incident took place just before 1 p.m. at milepost 17.3 of WY 24. Schaffer was negotiating a series of curves on her motorcycle when she entered a hard right-hand, downhill curve. A Minnesota man has been given a suspended sentence on possession charges after both methamphetamine and marijuana were found on his person and in his vehicle during a traffic stop. On October 4, 2023, a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper was patrolling U.S. Hwy 212 near milepost 16 when he saw a vehicle traveling east at a high rate of speed. Traffic radar recorded the speed at 85 mph in a 70 mph zone.
