  • Hospital sees first positive virus cases

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 6, 2020

Sundance Memorial Hospital experienced two positive cases of COVID-19 last week, according to Interim CEO Micki Lyons. The first patient was announced on Thursday and is no longer within the facility as they were transferred to Rapid City for treatment. “Everything went well,” reported Lyons to the Crook County Medical Services District Board of Trustees after the first incident. After it was confirmed that the patient had tested positive, she said, the hospital went through the process of determining who may have been exposed and asking any em...

  • CCMSD goes ahead with new hospital application

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 6, 2020

Should Crook County Medical Services District apply for CARES Act funding for a new hospital when there is still debate as to whether the community wants one? This question was raised at Friday’s meeting of the board of trustees while considering what to do with the completed application. Interim CEO Micki Lyons asked for the board’s input as to whether the application for $55 million to build a modern hospital with single rooms and quarantine facilities should be submitted. There has been “conflicting information” as to whether the federal mon...

  • Schools release fall plans as pandemic continues

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 6, 2020

With the new school semester looming and the pandemic still rife across Wyoming, Crook County School District has released its “Smart Start” plan, which aims to ensure a return to brick-and-mortar teaching this fall. The plan has been in progress for several months and has been altered during that time to meet with the state’s requirements. Information from a survey sent to parents in June was used to guide the plan and will affect such factors as the platform that would be used to deliver remote education should there be a need for a lockd...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 6, 2020

In the July 30 edition of your paper you ran an article about the Wyoming Gun Owners organization. In it you quoted negative statements about the group from sources such as NBC News, The Washington Post, and The Daily Beast. These are the worst of the worst regarding the values that most Wyoming residents hold dear. These are the exact groups who try to chisel away and eventually destroy our Second Amendment rights by labeling anyone who supports traditional values as “extremists.” Whether a group has an out of state presence is immaterial in...

  • Scholarship to wear a mask is not the right direction for Wyoming students

Jillian Balow, Superintendent of Public Instruction|Aug 6, 2020

I am alarmed at the free college rhetoric that hit the Wyoming news cycle over the past week. I know our post-secondary institutions are concerned about enrollment being down this fall and the financial hardship that will cause. But dangling the offer of free college with federal CARES money is not the right message or strategy for that money or our state. It is all too easy in contemporary politics for politicians to offer free everything, we can do better than that in Wyoming. A draft bill, proposed by Speaker Harshman, and supported by...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 6, 2020

I don’t think I’m likely to go down in Wyoming history as a famous birdwatcher. Not that this was an ambition I felt was mine to achieve, but my failures over the last few days have certainly clarified that my talents lie elsewhere. I don’t know about you guys, but we’ve been noticing more variety in the winged visitors passing through this season. We have crossbills and robins, the odd bird of prey and, of course, the ever-present turkeys and their adorable offspring. Still waiting on the ret...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 6, 2020

Health Management Services (HMS), the company that was until recently overseeing the management of Crook County Medical Services District, has given notice that it will be withdrawing its legal claims against the district. HMS filed suit against the district, claiming the company had been given 120 days of notice as per its contract, but was then dismissed without payment. According to the complaint, the five-year contract states that payment for HMS’s services would take the form of five percent of CCMSD’s total gross operating revenues. Thi...

  • County to rebuild two roads

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 6, 2020

The county commissioners have kicked off the official process to rebuild two county roads near Sundance that were damaged during the installation of a pipeline. The project will utilize funding that was provided in 2018 by the pipeline company, Oneok, specifically for that purpose. “When Oneok was building their pipeline, the Board of County Commissioners entered into an agreement with them that gave them the easements. They gave us half a million dollars that included maintenance on some of these roads,” explained County Attorney Joe Baron on...

The rebranding will not affect customers and cooperative members, says Chief Marketing Officer Jason Wille, other than receiving the benefit of combined network capabilities and industry expertise. The rebranding will bring Range Telephone Cooperative, RT Communications (RT), Advanced Communications Technology (ACT) and Dubois Telephone Exchange (DTE) together under one brand name: Range. “This i...

Though exact details are still being worked out with health officials, Burman said that the stadium’s capacity will...

Too much hay may be the ultimate result of an unusually wet and hot summer. One traveler reports 40 stacks of hay on one place. Hugh Thompson guessed his first cutting at 2 loads per acre; it amounted to 37 loads fro...
