County Treasurer Mary Kuhl was arrested on Friday on criminal charges related to her conduct as an elected official. The allegations include that she listed a customer’s license plate tabs as lost in the mail but then placed them on her own vehicle; that she adjusted the tax system to hide missing money; and that she issued a false certificate so that a personal friend could avoid paying registration fees. The investigation was headed by a special agent of the Wyoming Division of Criminal I...
With wildfires burning locally and across the nation and little reprieve from the hot, dry weather in sight, it’s likely that the smoke haze is here to stay for the time being. Air quality alerts issued by the Wyoming Air Quality Division and National Weather Service covered much of Crook County over the weekend and into the beginning of this week due to the wildfire smoke drifting across the region. The federal AirNow system has detected smoke plumes over this area over recent days and m...
A total of eleven law enforcement officers from three agencies combined forces last week to apprehend an Illinois man who was reported to be suicidal after being shamed for getting vaccinated. On July 20 at around 10:30 a.m., dispatch alerted all Crook County Sheriff’s Office units that a suicidal subject armed with a shotgun was located in a vehicle on Highway 14. The initial response included both Sheriff’s Office deputies and Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers. According to the report of one of the deputies, witnesses on Highway 14 waited for...
Though it appears construction is complete on Red Bluffs Clinic, the Board of Trustees for Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) was not able to move ahead with negotiations to occupy the building during last week’s meeting. The board made the request at June’s regular meeting for the Crook County Medical Foundation to provide further information, including a breakdown of the numbers. This request was made after the foundation rejected the board’s latest offer to lease space in the building and it became apparent that there had been...

Living on Elkhorn Creek and going to country schools, mainly Happy Hollow, Barbara and younger sister Betty grew up as ranch kids. 1 Years Ago August 4, 1921 One of the worst cloud-bursts in the history of Crook County occurred late Wednesday night at 11o’clock, resulting in the loss of two lives at Beulah. The camp of Dr. L.R. Bower was near the mill, and was struck by four feet of water, sweeping the entire party and their car into the stream. They had only a moment’s warning, and the doctor had placed his wife in the car, expecting to get the others and drive out of the danger. Mrs. Bower went into the stream with the...

Reports were given from agencies including town and county fire departments, EMS departments, the Crook County Sheriff’s Office and Wyoming Highway Patrol. In Sundance, said EMS Director Anthony V...
Crook County Medical Services District is looking to appoint a Hulett area representative to replace Connie Lindmier on its board of trustees. “Connie gave a wonderful eight and a half years to the board and has tendered her resignation,” said board chairman Mark Erickson during Thursday’s meeting. Erickson explained that the Hulett district includes more than just the town itself because it is based on the three partitions created for the school district. Consequently, the Hulett district also includes Beulah, Alva and Aladdin. Anyone inter...

Dear Editor, Good afternoon neighbors and patriots. I’m sure most of you have seen my signs referring to private property rights. Glad you noticed. I’m absolutely against any government entity taking away any of my freedoms, including my property rights! I urge all of the citizens in city limits to defend their property rights. This means attending the next city council meeting August 3 and letting the council know how you feel about giving up more private property rights. There has to be a better solution than another ordinance passed, whe...
Dear NP, “Can you tell me what skin cancer looks like? My mother died from skin cancer that spread to the underlying bones. What can I do to help prevent skin cancer other than sunscreen? I am 48 years old.” Dear Reader, Skin cancer is the most common cancer type in the world. In the United States, one out of every five persons will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. More than two people will die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour. While these statistics are frightening, finding and tre...
It’s not every day that a snail solves a centuries-old mystery. Thanks to a long-dead group of gastropods, we’ve now discovered that one of my county’s most famous landmarks both is and isn’t as old as we thought it was. I’m referring in this somewhat confusing statement to a visual delight that I’ve introduced you to in this column before: the Cerne Abbas Giant. Carved into the hillside in Dorset, towering 180 feet over the nearby village, is what I’ve long believed to be an early example...

Healy III sentenced Idler to between two and six years in a state penal institution for the first count, one year of incarceration for the second and 180 days...
From the perspective of local healthcare providers, the pandemic has been in flux for the last few weeks. According to CEO Micki Lyons, Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) has been following a pattern of a few COVID-19 patients one week, then none for the next; admitting a positive inpatient one week then not seeing more for a little while. The State of Wyoming is sticking in the range of 350 new cases per week, Lyons said. For this reason, things will be staying the same within Crook County Memorial Hospital. Visitation is still...
