Wildfire came so close to Pine Haven last week that flames were clearly visible from residents’ back yards on the northwest end of town. Fortunately, thanks to the combined efforts of 85 firefighters from numerous local units, it was brought under control with the loss of just one home. The fire was reported on the afternoon of June 16 at around 2 p.m. and quickly reached 100 acres in size. A full fire ban went into effect across Crook County on Thursday when the county commissioners met to consider the request from Fire Warden Doug Leis and approve the associated ordinance. Due to the high fire danger and the number of fires that local volunteers have tackled over the past couple of weeks, the commission agreed that the restrictions should begin the same day. A Crook County woman has won a prestigious 2021 Spur Award from Western Writers of America for her poem “Baptism.” Patricia Frolander received the award award in Loveland, Colorado, at the WWA SPUR Awards dinner. The poem, written in memory of her grandmother, is from her book Second Wind published by High Plains Press in 2020. “The book captures Wyoming ranch life in exquisite detail and may change the way the world thinks about women in ranching,” one reviewer wrote. Recent fires in the region have prompted the Devils Tower KOA to cancel its annual fireworks display, scheduled for July 4. Owner Ogden Driskill said, “We are proud of the great fireworks show we put on each year, but it’s just too dry and there is too much at risk. There was significant response from the public to news that a mysterious pile of military tombstones had been found on the hill next to Beulah, says Vernon Davis of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers.
