    Jun 15, 2023

Warren Peak is resplendent with wildflowers this week thanks to rainy spring days across the area. According to the National Weather Service, June 9 and 10 brought over an inch to many places. A total of 1.05 inches were recorded near Alva during that time period, for instance....

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 15, 2023

Retired world champion bronc rider Tom Reeves told the Sundance City Council last week that he is planning to bring his youth program to the county fairgrounds, promising to offer an economic boost to the community alongside a “rite of passage” opportunity for local kids. Reeves told the council he began the Wild Horses Building Champions program in 2018. The next year, he said, saw the group host 53 events from Oregon to New York. The event includes a professional rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, that aims to...

  • Council lines out ordinance enforcement, begins water project

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 15, 2023

The Sundance City Council has taken the necessary steps to direct the Crook County Sheriff’s Office, with whom the city contracts for law enforcement coverage, to enforce certain city ordinances while appointing a special municipal officer to issue civil citations. The council has been working towards this goal since last year, with the intent of having deputies enforce a select number of ordinances while leaving the civil ones to Public Works Director Mac Erickson as the city’s enforcement officer. Sheriff Jeff Hodge met with Council Member Jo...

  • Fireworks get nod for July 4

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 15, 2023

Those hoping to celebrate the Independence Day holiday in style this year have now been officially granted approval to do so. The Sundance City Council has passed a resolution to permit fireworks within the city limits throughout the holiday period this year. However, the resolution cautions that the Sundance Fire Chief has the authority to deem that conditions are too dry for fireworks at any time. If conditions remain favorable, fireworks will be allowed between Sunday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 4 between the hours of noon and 11...

  • Little appreciation

    Jun 15, 2023

Kids and their carers from Kid Prints visited City Hall on Tuesday morning to deliver a poster covered in little handprints to thank the council and city staff for their recent support. The council opted last month to pay off the note on the daycare building to avoid an increase in rent and replenish Kid Prints' coffers in the amount of $4000 to assist during a tough financial time that was partly caused by high heating costs during the tough, cold winter. The group visited during a walkabout...

Ultimately, the council hopes to secure funding to update its courts for three different sports, also including pickleball and tennis. • New policy needed for out-of-town utilities

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 15, 2023

The Sundance City Council has come to the realization that it needs a solid policy on providing utilities to landowners whose property is outside of town limits. On the one hand, the council did not consider a request from a local resident to provide water to his home in the canyon area to be unreasonable. On the other hand, Public Works Director Mac Erickson and Karla Greaser of Trihydro, City Engineers, are concerned about the “can of worms” that granting this request might open. Until a pol...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jun 15, 2023

Dear Editor, If you don’t have a gun, here is a way to ruin someone’s plans for you. Wasp and hornet spray typically shoots 20 to 30 feet and is a lot more accurate, while the pepper or mace spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until the police arrive or they can get to the hospital for an antidote. Wasp and hornet spray is easy to find and more effective than mace or pepper spray and doesn’t attract attention like a can of pepper spray would. I keep a can in my car,...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 15, 2023

You may have noticed in the news this last week that the “special relationship” between my homeland and yours has once again been strengthened. President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appeared together on Thursday to announce the Atlantic Declaration, tying our two countries together more tightly than ever before. Whatever one might think of the two leaders and their administrations, I have strong ties to both countries and would have difficulty faulting either one of them for thi...
