Hats flew in the air on Sunday evening as 33 seniors completed their careers at Sundance High School and prepared to move on to the next stage of their lives. The Class of 2021 graduated in a commencement ceremony that began with the presentation of colors by the Sundance Honor Guard and a welcome from Josh Pridgeon, class president. Salutatorian Rhianna Heaster’s heartfelt address was well-complemented by Valedictorian Owen Haiar’s more light-hearted speech. Once scholarships had been ann...
Another opportunity to own a locally created piece of art and support your local cultural center at the same time is just around the corner. The annual Old Stoney Art Auction is scheduled for June 5, and this year it will be taking place inside the historic building itself. Due to the renovation process, the auction has been hosted in a tent outside Old Stoney for the last few years. However, says Museum Director Rocky Courchaine, this year’s attendees can expect the same food, wine and fun under the building’s own roof. The evening will kick o...

The board of trustees is currently considering two very different proposed budgets for Crook County Medical Services District’s next fiscal year. One includes the cost of renting the new Hulett Clinic, while the other does not. Both versions of the budget include a deficit, which is not unusual, as federal funding is generally available to critical access hospitals as a reimbursement to help make up the difference. However, the loss to the district if it remains in the current building would be approximately $185,000, while the loss if the d...
Two self-proclaimed “First Amendment auditors” came to Sundance last week on a mission to “prove” that local law enforcement goes beyond its remit and encroaches upon citizens’ right to freedom of speech. After the resulting video was posted to the internet on two separate social media accounts, fans of the twosome flooded the community with phone calls, messages and emails decrying the Crook County Sheriff’s Office and calling Sheriff Jeff Hodge a “tyrant.” The incident began on Monday morning when the father-and-son duo arrived at Sund...
What began as an empty lot transformed into a concrete foundation and this week has begun taking shape as a building. According to owner Bruce Speidel, who is constructing a new gallery on the Main Street site, things are going according to plan so far. “It’s looking like we hoped it would,” he said on Tuesday, as Four Aces continued work to put up the frame. The next step will be to complete the interior, which Speidel will be taking on himself with the assistance of family. If all conti...

Eva Kyar, 82, went to sleep peacefully on May 17, 2021 and is in the Good Lord’s hands now. She married Roger Kyar in 1963. They had one daughter, Pam. In 1966 they moved to the Sundance area and have lived in the area ever since. She enjoyed taking pictures – family, animals and nature were her favorite subjects. Sewing was a creative outlet for her – she could make anything look like it came from an exclusive store. Cooking was another thing she excelled at – bread was her specialty. She was...
On Flag Day, July 14, 1939, Henry and Laura Engelhaupt welcomed Mary to their family. She joined siblings, Joe, Richard and Evelyn in a family whose privilege in life was being raised by loving, caring and devoted parents who taught them the value of humility, courage, responsibility and, above all else, work ethic. After leaving high school, Mary spent her life building a real social network stretching from Sundance, Wyoming, to Sheridan, Wyoming and across Northern Idaho. As she journeyed through life, she built deep and special friendships...

1 Years Ago May 26, 1921 About 1500 head of cattle were moved through town Tuesday. It was a bunch from the D Ranch en route to the Driskill range on Dry Gulch. That Crook County is growing steadily is evidenced by the report of the birth of a boy at the Charles Wyman home at Aladdin Monday and a girl Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vore on Redwater. One miner was killed and another painfully injured by a rock fall in No. 4 mine last week at Cambria. Two others who were standing nearby escaped death by a miracle. George Alexe, the...
Our Thanks May 19 was the last RT-130 fire training class but on by Wyo. State Forestry for 2021. In about a month the certificates will be available through the zone warden in your area. We had about 50 people attend the training – twice what we expected. It was wonderful to see such interest from people from all over the county. It may be a long, rough fire season. Every one of you can be a valuable asset. Thanks for attending. Crook County Fire Zone 12 AKA Aladdin VFD Our Thanks The family of Richard “Dickie” Proctor sends thank you messages...

Sundance first graders celebrated the annual Wyoming Reads on Tuesday May 18, 2021 in the park at the Sundance pond. Area coordinator Bonnie Stahla, Youth Services Librarian at the Crook County Library in Sundance, explained to the group how Wyoming Reads came to be and how the Sue Jorgensen foundation was founded. She then read the fairytale of “The Good Queen Sue” with the help of the students. A readers’ theater of “Pigs Make Me Sneeze” by Mo Willems was performed by Bonnie Stahla; Carrie Ril...

Last Monday, a pair of self-proclaimed saviors arrived in town to rescue us all from the tyranny of our overbearing law enforcement. We have so many questions about their behavior, but the one we really want answered is this: did they bother to ask anyone whether we needed saving? Did the “First Amendment auditors” who intimidated citizens and harangued our hard-working deputies consider for a moment that, actually, we might have the kind of exemplary law enforcement in this county that other communities would be jealous of? Did they speak to...
In response to last week’s letter to the editor, I feel some clarity might be of use to our readers. The letter accused us of bias against the Crook County Hospital Foundation and those members of the Crook County Medical Services District’s (CCMSD) board of trustees who support their efforts to move the Hulett clinic into a new building. Unfortunately, this criticism appears to be an attempt to cover the real issue: a consistent lack of transparency for a project that does not appear to have been properly planned out. This isn’t about what...
Dear NP, “Please discuss the screening recommendations for pediatric hypertension. My 14-year-old had a blood pressure of 151/102 during a recent sports physical. I don’t remember his blood pressure being checked at previous medical appointments.” Dear Reader, Recommendations for blood pressure screening in children can vary depending on the organization presenting the guidelines. The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) is an organization that reviews the evidence for or against screening services. Currently, the USPST...
The rains of spring have arrived, bringing several days of overcast weather and a significant green-up to the Sundance area. But contrary to how things may appear, the U.S. Drought Monitor has yet to lift the warnings of severe drought in Crook County. At this time, approximately two thirds of the county still remains within the severe drought rating. The northeastern and southwestern corners are listed as within moderate drought conditions. In positive news for this region, moderate precipitation over recent days has improved the situation in...
An outbreak of salmonella infections has so far caused illness in 43 states, including Wyoming. The infections have been linked to backyard poultry and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are urging the public to take extra care when handling chickens, ducks and other fowl. At this time, two infections have been reported in Wyoming. In total, 163 people in the U.S. are known to have become ill from salmonella and 34 of those people have been hospitalized. However, the CDC cautions that the true number of ill people is probably significantly h...

Jenerou allegedly denied the allegations and claimed he had been messing around with the alleged victim.
