  • Johnson trial likely to stay here

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 18, 2019

Judge Michael Deegan will not be granting a request from the defense to move the homicide trial of Jessie Johnson to a new venue. Unless it proves impossible to seat a 12-person jury, the trial will take place in Crook County. Defense attorney Don Fuller filed a motion to change the venue at the pre-trial hearing on March 19 through “an abundance of caution”. Fuller expressed concerns over the low population of Crook County and the potentially difficult task of forming a jury “untainted” by involvement in the Marty Smith trial. Judge Deegan...

  • Déjà vu

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 18, 2019

Like an aftershock of the blizzard that hit five weeks ago, snow and wind once again rolled through Crook County last week – on the same day of the week, bringing a similar deluge of snow and strong winds to keep it moving, and lasting for a similar period of time. This time, though, the storm was preceded by thunder, lightning and several hours of rainfall and its span covered northeast Wyoming and northwest South Dakota. Sundance and its surrounds experienced an estimated 12 inches of snow fal...

  • Working the "last great race"

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 18, 2019

Enthusiasts flock to witness the glory of the Iditarod each year, a thousand mile race in which man and dog work together to cover hostile territory through whiteout conditions and sub-zero temperatures. Its path honors the serum run in 1925 that saw a relay of sled teams rush to Nome carrying the cure to a community plagued by diphtheria. For local Doug Ramsey, who decided when he retired that it was time to tick an important item off his bucket list, standing witness to the tradition didn't...

  • Peek at the Past

    Apr 18, 2019

1 Years Ago The Times April 16, 1919 Tony Bissacca was in from Beulah Friday. He is still gaining and feeling quite well after his wounds on the French front and subsequent seven months’ confinement in a hospital, during which time it was questionable whether or not his shrapnel-wounded arm could be saved. Tony was also gassed, and entering the hospital weighing 217 pounds, and losing to 160 pounds speaks something of the siege he had. He was in the veterinary corps, it is understood, and while working with the horses a shell burst among t...

  • Cattlewomen program brings local beef to school

    Tracy Bush, Crook County Cattlewomen|Apr 18, 2019

A small rural school of 160 students, K through 12, in Hulett, is the recipient of a new program this year thanks to our local Crook County Cattlewomen. Instead of the highly processed soy-based meat traditionally served for the lunch program, students and staff now enjoy locally grown pure beef. We believe when kids eat better, they learn better. The head cook, Julie Bauman, currently receives far more compliments from both staff and students when they serve the donated beef for lunch. Supersizing, when students go back for seconds, has more...
