  • Fire season is here

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 31, 2022

Unless the long-term weather forecast undergoes a pretty dramatic change, 2022 is shaping up to be another potentially dangerous fire season. Fire Warden Doug Leis is warning Crook County citizens to take care when burning slash piles even now, and expects there will be fire restrictions in place as early as April. “The conditions right now are the same as what they would be in September, really. It’s not greened up and if we don’t get some moisture, we’re not going to get a lot of green-up,” he says. “These spring fire conditions are as bad...

Crook County Veterinary Clinic welcomes a new practitioner: Jake Johnson, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, who took on the role at the beginning of the year upon moving to the county from Nebraska. Johnson grew up in the south-central part of Nebraska. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), then attended vet school in a combined program between UNL and Iowa State University. "After school, I practiced for six years in Imperial, Nebraska, which is in...

Randi Stevens and her son Collin of Louisiana came across the Jackalope Jump by accident on Saturday during a trip to Keyhole Reservoir. As a supporter of Special Olympics, she was more than happy to brave the chilly leap. The annual event attracted fewer participants than usual, but still raised an estimated $4600....

Appearing in court for an arraignment on Thursday, Ed Svoboda pled not guilty to the charges against him related to the death of his wife in September by reason of mental illness. His wife, Kathleen, was allegedly hit by a truck and trailer in her back yard on September 5, 2021. Svoboda was arrested and charged with murder in the first degree. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment at minimum, and could be given the death penalty, a $10,000 fine or both. He has also been charged with murder in the second degree, carrying a minimum penalty of...

  • Arrivals boost local population

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 31, 2022

Newly released U.S. Census Bureau data reveals that a record 73% of American counties saw deaths outnumber births last year – but Crook County experienced quite the opposite. However, the main reason for a significant increase in the local population appears to be migration. Statistics reveal that this county was one of the beneficiaries of a national trend of people moving from more populated areas to more rural parts of the nation, driven in part by the pandemic. “The patterns we’ve observed in domestic migration shifted in 2021,” said Dr...

  • Final bill signing sees three vetoes

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 31, 2022

The final bills of the 2022 Wyoming Legislative Session crossed the desk of Governor Mark Gordon last week, but not all of them received his approval. The governor exercised his veto power on three, while two others – including the bill that addressed redistricting – will become law without his signature. In Gordon’s letter addressing the redistricting bill (HB-100/HEA-62), he noted that the Joint Corporations, Elections and Political Subdivisions committee put in “an immense amount of work” to develop the legislation, including 20 meetings...

  • Defense argues child abuse charges are too "general" to defend

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 31, 2022

Karey Hedlund of Moorcroft appeared in District Court last week to present a motion demanding more specific details of the times and dates of the child abuse she is alleged to have committed. Her lawyer, Steven J. Titus, argued that trying to build a defense based on accusations that span six years is akin to finding “a needle in six years’ worth of hay.” Hedlund entered a plea of not guilty in January to 16 charges of child abuse and one of aggravated assault and battery. Titus argued, based on precedent from previous Wyoming cases, that...
