Troy L Jensen passed away at his home March 18, 2020, surrounded by the love of his wonderful family. Troy’s story began September 1, 1965, in Laramie, Wyoming, as the oldest of three sons born to Gary and Peggy (Tschetter) Jensen. He was raised in Sundance, Wyoming, where he met and married his high school sweetheart Tammy (Durfee) Jensen on July 3, 1992. The love they shared is second to none. Their union brought two beautiful children into their life; Kaitlyn Marie and Hunter Lee Jensen. T...
Like the rest of the world, Crook County is navigating uncharted waters this week as COVID-19 continues its spread. As the streets grew emptier, businesses and government entities scrambled to continue offering service and Wyoming’s citizens joined much of the nation in a period of self-isolation. “It is an absolute fact that social distancing slows the growth of coronavirus disease,” Governor Mark Gordon said in a statement on Friday as he endorsed an order from State Health Officer Dr. Alexi... The State of Wyoming has completed a transaction to purchase a sizeable chunk of land within the Moskee, near the Grand Canyon area. The acquired land is estimated at around 4349 acres in size, around seven miles east of Sundance. The now-state owned land is accessible via the Moskee road and varies from steep forested canyons to meadows populated with native grasses and forbs. An estimated 90% is forested and Cold Springs Creek runs through the property. In 2018, the Office of State Lands and Investment (OSLI) Forestry Division was awarded $6...
Dillon Johnson learned to race before he figured out how to walk. Now 23 years old and an up-and-coming stock car racer, in the last year he has claimed the track championships in Gillette and Sheridan, the Wyoming State Championship and ninth place in the Wissota National Points Championship. Stock car racing is a lot like NASCAR, he says. “It’s basically the same thing: all we’re doing is turning left, but it’s on dirt.” It’s been a family tradition for three generations. His grandpa rac...
The Sundance Chamber of Commerce has launched a donation drive that will aim to support our local businesses during a time when so many of us remain in lockdown and a state order remains in effect that limits their ability to function. It’s also an opportunity for the community to support its hard-working essential personnel and support people who are out of work due to COVID-19 related layoffs. The idea is simple: donations from the community will be used to purchase gift cards from our local businesses. These will then be given to our m...

Our Thanks Family and Friends, Thank you for the many expressions of sympathy extended to our family after the loss of our beloved wife and Mother, Rose Zella. The kind words were comforting; the shared memories brought warmth to our souls and smiles to our faces. The food, the cards, the flowers, the house visits, the music and your attendance at her Celebration of Life were much appreciated. Thank you to the Ladies of the Good Shepherd Church and the Friends of the Crook County Library for the reception following the services. Thank you to...
Despite there being very little business as usual going on across Wyoming, Governor Mark Gordon has signed a number of bills into law since the 2020 Legislative Session drew to a close. Of those that have been signed, one in particular will likely see the Sundance City Council breathe a sigh of relief. The Omnibus Water Bill (construction) grants the city enough money to pay back Federal Emergency Management Agency funding that was used to re-site the Cole Water Storage tank in 2012 when it began falling off the hill. Several years later, FEMA...
1 Years Ago The Times March 24, 1920 Frank Simons of the Beulah country was transacting business in the county seat Monday. Mr. Simons is nearing the green grass season with practically no loss of livestock. He states the condition of winter wheat in his locality is very encouraging with prospect to date of a heavy yield, an encouraging outlook indeed. It is not only appropriate but very commendable that the Sundance Delphain Society is taking a leading part in helping to establish a public library in Sundance. The society is now busy with...
The District Judges who represent Crook County have issued general orders regarding how the courts will operate during the COVID-19 outbreak. The orders are an attempt to implement best practices as recommended by public health officials at the national, state and local level. So here I am, sitting at home and twiddling my fingers. As you may have noticed from the fact that you couldn’t come through our doors to renew your subscription, we at the newspaper have self-isolated as much as possible and we’ve all split up to work in different places so we can keep your news coming while this virus runs amok. Our plan, you see, is to have contingencies. We are aiming to avoid a situation in which all of us are contagious and nobody out in the community gets to read the wee...
The 65th Wyoming Legislature wound down late Thursday night (March 12). The session had four more days than a standard budget session and we needed them all to get through the year. As everyone is aware it has been a tough year for Wyoming's coffers and looks to be even tougher coming up. This year there were 256 house bills introduced and 97 of those became law. There were 142 Senate files and 70 of those became law. That is a 42% pass rate. The biggest bill in a budget session is the budget...
“And Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.’” (John 1:46). Come and see. We often look but rarely does one contemplate, behold and think on things. Our business, bustle, competing concepts and time are filled with that which has little meaning as it requires no commitment. Coming and going, going and coming seeing so much, but comprehending and understanding little. Like Philip, we will miss so much unless personally directed to “come and see.” The word “come” in the Greek is a sugges...
By Dan Nordberg SBA’s Regional Administrator and Amy Lea Wyoming District Director Wyoming’s small businesses are the fabric of our economy and their success is dependent on the ability to freely market products and services to communities across the state. As Americans face the new reality of “social distancing” measures, our local small businesses are bearing the brunt of that impact and are addressing serious concerns regarding declining customer traffic. In order to assist busines...
