  • Local Republicans censure Cheney

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 4, 2021

The Crook County Republican Party has voted to censure U.S. Representative Liz Cheney for her recent actions in supporting the impeachment of ex-President Donald Trump. “Like a lot of the counties around the state, we are disappointed in her decision,” says Roget Connett, Chairman of the local party. “It was unanimous on the vote.” Cheney has attracted criticism from Republicans across Wyoming who do not feel she was representing this state’s interests when she voted, alongside nine other House Republicans, in favor of the second impeachment of...

  • T'isn't the season

    Feb 4, 2021

It’s not supposed to be balmy at this time of year, but the week still began with an unseasonable warm-up. It’s always a good idea to take advantage of good weather, even when it’s unexpected. Ashley Davey-Karlson and her young family did exactly that in Clarenbach Park Tuesday, enjoying the playground in the warmer-than-expected sunshine....

  • Winter festival cancelled

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 4, 2021

The Sundance Winter Festival for 2021 has been cancelled due to a lack of snow. The mild weather this area has experienced so far this winter season is unfortunately not helpful when it comes to building ski joring and bar stool courses. Anticipating that there may not be enough snow on the ground still by the time the February 13 festival rolled around, organizers Steele Roping and the Sundance Downtown Business Association opted to make a final decision on February 1. With little ground cover on Monday and minimal snow on the forecast, Jamie...

  • Man leads law enforcement on two high speed chases

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 4, 2021

A county resident led law enforcement on two high speed chases in the space of one evening on the weekend. William Hamilton was eventually arrested after reports of a disturbance at a county residence led to him allegedly fleeing from police for several hours. According to an initial report from the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to a residence in the county, south of Moorcroft, at around 7:18 p.m. on January 31 for a report of a verbal domestic disturbance. He reports seeing two people standing in the yard, one of whom was later i...

  • Back on the track

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 4, 2021

A mountain lion hunt can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience even for the most avid of hunters, which is why volunteers from across northeast Wyoming were thrilled to provide one here in Crook County for a young man who recently recovered from leukemia. The experience was organized by Oconto River Kids, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit with the sole purpose of providing outdoor activities for kids with life-threatening illnesses. The charity connected 16-year-old Austin from Cody with county...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 4, 2021

The Board of Trustees has agreed to offer a proposal that would allow Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) to lease space inside the new Hulett clinic in exchange for a contribution towards the building’s expenses. On Wednesday, Board Attorney Kara Ellsbury suggested a proposal in which, “What we will pay is our proportionate share of the insurance, property taxes and utilities, based on square footage.” The Crook County Medical Foundation will need to figure out the total cost of these items, Ellsbury said, and the district would...

  • Legislative Update

    Ogden Driskill, Senator|Feb 4, 2021

We started our virtual session on January 12, gaveling in for a one-day start on the session. Bills were read in and assigned to committees and then we gaveled in with our committees, meeting virtually on January 19,20 and 21. The bills were all interim committee bills. We then reconvened on January 27 to work around 55 bills split between the House and Senate. The session was available either virtually or in person. I have attended both the gaveling in on the 12th and the session from January 2...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Feb 4, 2021

Dear Editor, I appreciate the opportunity given by our local newspaper to express opinions in this venue. Today, I’m addressing my opinion regarding an ad that appeared in last week’s newspaper as a result of two things, a national ad campaign which is now possible in part due to the changes occurring legislatively regarding perception of this topic and the subsequent changes in funding. My opinion noted here is a continuation of my last opinion about the need for all of us to remain smart about topics in and around us in our community, our...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 4, 2021

It’s amazing what you can get away with when you simply refuse to acknowledge your own actions. I disappeared down an internet rabbithole this week as I explored the story of a gentleman from the UK who has spent months running a Japanese restaurant from his home while denying he is running a Japanese restaurant from his home – and getting away with it. Sherlock Holmes would not have found this a mystery worthy of his attention, but somehow the local council has been unable to solve it. The gre...

  • Where are the grownups?

    Karla Pomeroy, Northern Wyoming News|Feb 4, 2021

There are many things happening in our community, state and country right now that make me shake my head. Let us start locally, last week on the day of President Joe Biden’s inauguration a resident of Ten Sleep burned an effigy of President Biden with a sign that said “not my-our president.” For several weeks, a resident outside of Worland, greets drivers coming to or leaving Worland with a sign that says “F#$% Biden” and “F#$% those who voted for Biden.” I understand that people are unhappy with the election, some even feel, just like Pre...

  • Legislator proposes consolidation of school districts

Kathryn Palmer, Wyoming Tribune Eagle Via Wyoming News Exchange|Feb 4, 2021

CHEYENNE — Facing massive cuts to the state’s K-12 schools budget, one lawmaker has proposed a bill to study the cost-saving benefits of consolidating Wyoming’s 48 school districts into 24. “We, as a Legislature, fully understand that we have to rein in costs for education. Rather than making cuts to teacher salaries, personnel or closing down schools, I thought this was a better avenue to pursue,” said Rep. Dan Zwonitzer, R-Cheyenne, who is sponsoring House Bill 77. “I spent two years chairing the Revenue Committee trying to raise some money...

  • Peek at the Past

    Feb 4, 2021

1 Years Ago Feb. 3, 1921 The Times has received in common with other Wyoming papers an appeal to “save the elk,” from W.B. Sheppard. While perhaps the game law can be improved in regard to elk, it would appear that this appeal comes at a queer time when the assistant state game warden is busy exterminating the surplus of this pest to the stockman and rancher. Which is worth the trouble – the elk or the livestock industry? Earl Caddock, Upton’s one time champion wrestler and challenger for the...
