  • Catching up

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 30, 2025

The snow has finally arrived, but has that impacted drought conditions in Crook County? A slow start to the season may see things begin to turn around. Like most of the region, this county is still expected to remain in drought for the foreseeable future. According to the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), much of the county had less than 50% of its average snow water equivalent until the end of last year. This warm, dry start to the water year, which begins on October 1, led to early snow drought conditions. Snowpack...

  • Best in snow

    Jan 30, 2025

A group of 32 fifth graders from Sundance Elementary descended upon the WYDOT shop on Thursday afternoon to visit the snow plows they helped to name. The seven names they came up with – now proudly visible on each plow's name plate – were whittled down from more than 30 suggestions. WYDOT employees explained how they keep Wyoming's roads safe and clear and gave them a tour, including a closer look at the inside of a plow – and, for some, a chance to find out just how many decibels its horn...

  • Half a century of service

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 30, 2025

Every firefighter in the region knows the name of Gari Gill. In fact, after half a century of service, it's safe to say there isn't a firefighter serving today who hasn't fought by his side at one time or another. Gill retired at the beginning of this year as Fire Chief for the City of Sundance, bringing his total number of years as part of the county's fire response to 52. "It's time," he smiles. It's not the first attempt he's made to step away. Gill was all set to retire in 2015, having alrea...

The ski-joring will be split into five divisions this year: snowboard only, f...

  • House pushes "Five and Dime" priorities

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 30, 2025

It’s been a busy first two weeks in the Wyoming House of Representatives, which has already sent a slate of bills across to the Senate for its consideration. Many relate to the Freedom Caucus’s “Five and Dime” plan, which focuses on the five top priorities it has outlined for this session: election integrity, immigration accountability, standing for Wyoming’s core in-dustries, ending wokeness in higher education and tax relief. Now enjoying a majority in the House for the first time, the caucus said its goal was to focus on key bills within te...

  • Protecting private property rights: a core Wyoming Value

Rob Geringer, Wyoming House of Representatives District 42, SW Laramie County R|Jan 30, 2025

In Wyoming, we believe in the principles of freedom, independence, and self-reliance. These are more than just ideals; they are the bedrock of our way of life. Chief among them is the sacred right to private property — the ability to own, use and dispose of land as we see fit without unnecessary interference from government, absent security concerns. That’s why I felt compelled to stand up and speak out against a provision in House Bill HB0118, which would limit private property owners’ rights to sell their land to the federal government. At fi...

  • What Trump's executive orders mean for Wyoming energy, mining

    Dustin Bleizeffer, WyoFile.com|Jan 30, 2025

President Donald Trump’s executive orders will fast-track oil and natural gas development, erase perceived federal regulatory “burdens” for extractive industries, halt electric vehicle incentive programs and wind energy permitting, withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement on climate change and, above all, “are a win for U.S. energy and Wyoming,” according to Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon. Details on exactly how the new administration will achieve these things are not clear, according to some critics. The sweeping climate and energy policy di...

On January 23, our fifth graders went on a field trip to the local WYDOT building. A few weeks earlier they were challenged to come up with the most creative snow plow names in the state. They successfully proved that not only were they the best but exceptional. As a reward, they got to go see the local plows, and were delighted to find their names on the plows. The names included Snokyo Drift, Vincent Van Snow, Sleetle Juice, Plowboy Joe, Plowed American, Snowbuster and Slim Snowy. The kids got to sit in the plows and made several of their...

  • UW Extension

Vicki Hayman, Community Vitality and Health Educator|Jan 30, 2025

Did you know a person's thirst response diminishes by up to 40% in cold weather? Blood is prevented from flowing freely to extremities when blood vessels constrict. Directing that blood flow to the body's core to protect vital organs tricks the body into thinking it's properly hydrated. Therefore, people often drink less water, thus increasing the risk of dehydration. Staying adequately hydrated is important during the winter. As the temperatures begin to drop, we may not feel like we need the...
