  • Committee gives nod to redistricting plan

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 6, 2022

A successful step for Senator Ogden Driskill in his efforts to keep Crook and Weston counties whole: his updated plan for redistricting this portion of the state was officially adopted by the committee working on the process last week. “They took my plan and adopted it,” he says of the December 28 meeting of the Corporations Committee. “That’s not to say it’s going to stay, but it’s adopted.” Driskill’s aim since the process began has been to preserve both counties as the basis of their own voting districts – something Weston County has not ha...

  • Winterfest coming back this year

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 6, 2022

Commerce has announced that the Sundance Winter Festival is officially coming back to town. Doubts were raised over the future of the popular event when the original organizers stepped down and the chamber struggled to find replacement volunteers to take on the planning and cover Main Street in the requisite piles of snow. Fortunately, says Jamie Jessen, a solution has now been found in the form of a contract with the organizers of Campbell County's own version of the winter sport contest,...

  • Snowpack drops to near half of normal levels

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 6, 2022

Though flurries have passed through the area fairly regularly over the last couple of weeks, Wyoming’s snowpack is lower than usual so far this season – and Crook County is almost at the bottom of the list in terms of how much snow has accumulated in this area. While the overall average for the state is 88% of the median for this time of the year, Crook County has just over half the snowpack it would normally see. Only South Platte has a lower percentage at 31% of median. According to the Water Resources Data System and Wyoming State Cli...

The local chapter of the Muley Fanatics has made a name for itself by pursuing worthy goals to support wildlife and habitat, many of which have focused on the younger members of this community. Of special importance to Kyndell Flint, chapter founder, is a project introduced for the first time in 2021 that gave youngsters with life-threatening illnesses the chance to experience the joys of hunting. "We had four total kids that we took out this year. Two deer hunts, one elk hunt and a turkey...

  • Crook among top five counties for employment rates

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 6, 2022

Unemployment rates are continuing to drop across Wyoming, including in this area. Crook remains within the top five counties in terms of the number of people who currently have jobs. Wyoming’s unemployment rate as a whole fell from 4.5% in September to 3.7% by the end of November, marking a period of five months in which that percentage has fallen. This state now sits well below the national average of 4.2%. Crook County shares fourth place on the list with Niobrara at 1.9% unemployment, a modest decrease from September’s 2%. The counties with...

  • FBI warns of fake law enforcement call scam

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 6, 2022

FBI Denver has issued a warning to residents of Wyoming and Colorado that a new phone scam is hitting this area in which people posing as local law enforcement demand payment for a warrant of fine to clear the victim’s name. “The FBI warns citizens that if they receive a phone call from someone claiming to be law enforcement asking for money or gift cards, to hang up and report it to their local law enforcement authorities and the FBI,” says FBI Denver Division Special Agent in Charge Michael Schneider. More than 300 women have been hit by th...

A Cheyenne man has been bound over to District Court on possession charges after the person he was staying with in Sundance requested that he be removed from their residence. A Crook County Sheriff’s Office deputy investigated a disturbance and unwanted person at a residence in Sundance on September 30 when the occupant asked for their guest, Clinton Bruguier, to be removed. The occupant stated that Bruguier kept some marijuana in the bathroom cabinet and they wanted it, and Bruguier, removed. The deputy reports observing a metal smoking p...

  • Judge orders Rammell brand inspection case to continue

Joy Ufford, Pinedale Roundup Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jan 6, 2022

PINEDALE — Although county and state attorneys argued veterinarian Rex F. Rammell’s appeal in 9th District Court of four brand-inspection convictions and sentences was untimely and improper, the judge disagreed. In Sublette County’s possibly longest-running misdemeanor case, Rammell was charged on June 27, 2019, with violating the state required brand-inspection law by trailering four horses and a colt from Sweetwater County to Sublette County for summer grazing. The law is Wyoming Statute 11-21-103, which Rammell has argued as uncon...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 6, 2022

In last week’s column, I took a look back at 2021 and discovered it wasn’t quite the disaster it seemed – at least, it wasn’t all that bad if you were a thieving dog or lost your wedding ring in a potato patch. That’s all very well, but what about this brand new year of ours? Turns out there’s a great deal to look forward to in 2022, no matter your persuasions or interests. Here are just a few examples of what’s on the horizon. For me, 2022 is special because it’s a year-long celebration of...
