January The year began with a life-threatening cold snap that saw weather warnings across most of the lower 48 as Arctic air migrated down from Canada. The lowest wind chills were recorded east of Pine Haven at -57 degrees F and Hulett at -56 degrees F. The cold led to issues for the Sundance Volunteer Fire Department during a blaze in the attic of a home. Wanda Materi, age 95, of Upton, Wyoming, passed peacefully on December 27, 2024, at Weston County Manor. Wanda Mae Canfield was born May 1, 1929, at the ranch on Kara Creek to Willard and Ada Canfield. Along with her twin Wallace, they joined sisters, Leona and Rachael, and brother Kenneth. Larry G. Jackson, born October 5, 1942, in Pierre, South Dakota, passed away December 23, 2024, surrounded by loved ones, in Gillette, Wyoming. Larry did well with his life. He was raised in Presho, South Dakota, where after high school he worked as a carpenter to pay for college. At Dakota Wesleyan University he met the love of his life, Susan. Mark Gordon has acknowledged receipt of a citizens’ complaint regarding Weston County Clerk Becky Hadlock and issues with the 2024 General Election and is investigating the matter, according to a Dec. 27 press release.
