Seth Klamann, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jul 16, 2020

CASPER — Citing challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, the state Department of Health has withdrawn a proposal to add a new vaccine to the required list for school children. The Health Department announced the change Thursday. The proposed changes would’ve made the meningococcal vaccine — which protects against what an expert called a “devastating” and life-threatening disease — a requirement for attendance in public schools. The proposal would’ve also clarified other school requirements and provider agreements. The department sa...

  • Motorcycle rally set to go ahead

    Seth Klamann|Jun 18, 2020

Businesses that benefit from the visitor count during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally were no doubt relieved to hear on Monday evening that the Sturgis City Council had voted 8-1 to officially sanction the event this year, with modifications such as the cancellation of events like the parade that tend to see thousands of people lined up on the street. Businesses over the state line had already made clear they intended to go ahead. Reports suggested that more than 50 hospitality businesses reached consensus that the 80th anniversary will be...

  • Medicaid expansion dies again

Seth Klamann, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Feb 13, 2020

CASPER — Hours into the start of the 2020 legislative session, the Wyoming House killed a bill Monday that would’ve set the stage for Medicaid expansion. The bill fell at the earliest hurdle in the House, with nearly two thirds of the body voting against it as part of the chamber’s consent list. It’s a swift end for the measure, which would’ve given Gov. Mark Gordon the ability to study expansion and move it forward, albeit under the eye of the Legislature. Jen Simon of the Wyoming Women’s Action Network said the consent agenda passed 59-0...

CASPER — The names and salaries of every school district employee in Wyoming will be released this month after a request from a state senator, a move that’s drawn criticism from educators across the state. “There is a big gap between what I’m legally bound to do and what is the right thing to do,” said State Superintendent Jillian Balow. “And I have difficulty figuring out and reconciling how the release of names that intrudes on the privacy of citizens in our Wyoming community, that potentially puts their security, safety and other aspec...

  • Kaycee veteran's remains to be buried in late June

Seth Klamann, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|May 30, 2019

CASPER — When DeMaret Kirtley was last home in July 1950, he posed for a photo. His starched Army uniform hanging from his thin frame, Marston — as his friends and family called him — stood next to his father, the two men staring straight ahead, quintessential Wyoming ranchers. When Marston posed with his mother, he was closer, as warm with her as he was reserved with his dad. In another photograph, he leaned back against the fence of his parents’ porch, his hands in his pockets. He was 20. More than four months earlier, in late Februar...

  • Legislators study bill to raise taxes to fund schools

Seth Klamann, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jan 10, 2019

CASPER — Lawmakers will consider a bill that would increase taxes for all property in Wyoming and send tens of millions of dollars to public schools here over the coming years. The education-funding deficit has been a dominant topic for Wyoming lawmakers for years, as the recent bust created a deficit that was projected to top $1.8 billion by the beginning of the next decade. Two years later, the situation has stabilized somewhat, but the core problem remains unsolved, off cials said. This measure, which would add three mill levies to all p...
