US Patriots dominate Cougars in opener

The Upton-Sundance Patriots opened up their regular season with a road trip to Pavilion where they took on the Wind River Cougars and came away with 41 – 0 victory.

Leading the offensive charge was senior Jett Materi, who piled up 228 yards and three touchdowns. Dawson Butts added 53 rushing yards and a touchdown, Thomas Davis scampered for 22 yards and Chase Biehl had 11.

Senior quarterback Skyler Wagaman completed 5 of 9 passes for 122 yards, two touchdowns and had one interception. Upton’s Rourke McPeters hauled in three of Wagaman’s passes for 62 yards, Dawson Butts caught one touchdown pass that went 41 yards and Chase Biehl had the other touchdown reception which went for 19 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, McPeters notched 10 tackles followed by Donovan Gray with 9, Thomas Davis with 8, Wagaman with 5 tackles and a pair of interceptions and Hunter Woodard who had 5 tackles and a pair of pass breakups.

Next up for the Patriots is a conference game with Lusk (Niobrara County) in Sundance this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (game was originally scheduled for Friday night in Upton). The 1-0 Tigers are coming off a 47-0 rout of Burlington in Lusk last week.
