School board expected to name new interim superintendent Wednesday

By Sarah Pridgeon

The Board of Trustees is expected to officially appoint Jeff Carrier as interim superintendent for the Crook County School District at a special meeting on Wednesday. Having served as Superintendent for CCSD for a number of years, Carrier’s experience in the role will prove beneficial during the search for a permanent replacement, says Vice-Chairman Steve Blakeman.

“We had five candidates, including one person recommended by the School Board Association who lives in Las Vegas,” explains Blakeman. “We wanted the interim with the least amount of travel and the most number of days to devote to the role.”

Carrier’s candidacy was supported by his familiarity with the district, having spent many years as Superintendent before his retirement. Past board members are reported to have made no negative comments about Carrier’s previous tenure as Superintendent, describing him as having followed policy and managed the budget well.

“Jeff approached Board Member Ken Rathbun and Attorney Mark Hughes and said, as he lives here and knows the district, he’d be happy to take on the role if we couldn’t find anyone else to do it,” Blakeman continues. “He actually ended up being the best candidate on the basis of background checks with past board members, pay scale and available days.”

Being already accustomed to the role, Carrier will not be subject to the steep learning curve of a multiple-school district. This will allow the current board to focus its efforts on finding a new permanent superintendent, rather than on bringing the interim member of staff up to speed.

Carrier is currently Chairman of the Wyoming School Facilities Commission, in which role he controls the money used to build new schools. As this means he has direct input in the building of the new Moorcroft school, he may be required to retire from the position to take on the role of interim superintendent, due to conflict of interests.

A special meeting will be held on Wednesday night to introduce Carrier to the staff and teachers of the district’s schools.
