Richard (Dick) Smith 83, of Cheyenne passed away July 21, 2012 at Cheyenne Health Care Center in Cheyenne. Richard was the fifth child of the late Edward C. and Jessie C. (Smith) Smith of Sundance. He was born in Sundance February 20, 1929.
He grew up in the Bear Lodge and attended school in Sundance. He worked for the Adrian Hewes Ranch from 1946 till drafted in December 1952, he served in the Korean War, and trained at Ft. Leonardwood, MO in the 5th Heavy Tank BT. He was sent to Korea where he helped build roads. He was honorably discharged Sept. 1954, went back to work at the Hewes Ranch and was in the reserves in Sundance for the next eight years. He was a life time member of the VFW.
In 1966 he went to Rawlins to work in the oil fields. He met and married Gerri Blacksmith Keller in Rawlins. He is survived by his stepchildren, Debra Keller of Cheyenne, David and Eileen of Rawlins and three sisters: Donna Dinkins of Sundance, Emma Reinhold of Buhl, Idaho, Elaine Menjares of Greeley, Colorado, two brothers; Luther Smith of Midvale, Utah and Vance Smith of Rawlins, Wyoming; seven step grandchildren; thirteen step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-granddaughter; and one step great-great-grandson as well as many nieces and nephews.
He loved spending time with his family and was always a dedicated family man who was “Poppa” to us all. He always had a story for anything, whether it was serious or funny.
We will always remember and carry them forever.
Proceeded in death by wife Gerri, mother and father, sister Lorraine and brother Dennis; step granddaughter Deva Martinez; and step great-granddaughter Catlin Ray.
A memorial will be planned for a later date.
