Preston Herman Mitchell, “Dig”, passed at his home on Saturday, August 9, 2014. He was born to Laura Lucy Eckard and Preston Earl Mitchell on July 16, 1947. His early years were spent growing up on the ranch near Aladdin, Wyoming. After graduation from Sundance High School, he attended trade school in Fargo, North Dakota, and during that time, he met Marilyn Petersen. They were married and as a result of this union, seven children were born into their family. Preston worked as a mechanic in various positions before being asked to work for the Wyoming State Highway Department. Later, he left his job as a full-time mechanic and went back to the woods to log in his family logging business. He continued this vocation until moving to Billings in 2003. Preston and Marilyn divorced May 11, 1999. He married Patricia Anderson on December 27, 2003.
Preston leaves behind his eternal partner, Patricia, with stepchildren, Vernard C. Anderson, III, Danielle (Dale) Williams, Steven Anderson, Shawn Anderson, Kaylyn (Justin) Rigby, and Bradley (JaYoung) Anderson. His own children are, Preston K. Mitchell, Jr., Kathy Ripperger (Gail), Holly Bingham (Walter), Tammy Erickson (Lee), Tina Weigel, Heather Holden (George) and Christopher Mitchell (Jessica) and 38 grandchildren. His siblings, Laura Lee McKenney (Belle Fourche, South Dakota), Pat Mitchell (Arlington, Washington), Rita Pickard (Sundance, Wyoming), John Mitchell (Aladdin) and Billie Wolter (Denver, Colorado) also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014, at 10 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2929 Belvedere, Billings, Montana, with dedication of the grave at the Pleasantview Cemetery in Ballantine, Montana, at 2 p.m. Viewing will be available from 3-8 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2014, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W.
