Patriots keep marching forward

A long road trip to Pine Bluffs last Friday had little effect on the momentum being carried by the Upton-Sundance Patriots this season. Routing the home-team Hornets by a 40-8 margin, the U-S Patriots proved they have began to gel and continue to get stronger.

Patriot quarterback Ben Stoddard lit up the scoreboard with a touchdown pass to Skylar Wagaman in the first quarter and found Caleb Garhart later in the third for another. The Patriot running game continued to impress as Jett Materi ran in for a pair of scores while Wagaman added to his impressive season with a rushing touchdown of his own.

On defense, Kory Butts lead with 29 total tackles, followed by Trent Bush with 17 and Corbin Thompson with 16.

The Patriots improved to 4-1 overall (3-0 conference) as they face what is sure to be toughest portion of the season ahead.

First up, it’s a trip to Yoder for another road game against Southeast this Friday at 6 p.m. The Cyclones (1-2 conference) come into the contest with a two-game winning streak and a record that doesn’t necessarily reflect their true strength.

The currently undefeated Lusk Tigers will roll into Upton on Friday, Oct. 19 for the final regular season game under the lights. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Correction: Last week’s story about the Patriots victory over Hill City mistakenly identified the quarterback who threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter as Bryton Materi instead of Ben Stoddard.
