Icy challenge

IMG_4625(Sarah Pridgeon photo) Sixth grade teachers Heather Dryden and Abbie Love gamely took on the ice bucket challenge at lunchtime on Tuesday, with a little help from Principal Brian Hartwig. A phenomenon that has been making rounds on social media for days, brave participants across the world have been pouring buckets of freezing cold water over their heads to raise awareness and millions of dollars for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. After enduring the ice shower, the challenge requires that participants make a donation to an ALS charity and nominate their successors. Dryden and Love, who were nominated by one of their students, named fifth grade teachers, Todd Klopp and Blake Hunkins, as their nominees.

Guard helps with WA fire

A crew from the Wyoming National Guard is currently based out of Bowers Field in Ellensburg, Washington, to assist with that state’s forest fires. The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and crew will focus on medical evacuations as part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which allows a governor to seek assistance from other states in an emergency, at that state’s own cost. “It sounds like they’re busy up there,” said Lt. Col. Stacy Roth, one of the crewmembers heading to Washington. “They’re fighting fires on mountains, so a lot of time when medevac is called up, it’s not necessarily because of burns, but from working on the mountains and breaking ankles and things like that. We are bringing a 250-foot high-power hoist. We can pluck people off the side of the mountain if we have to.” Meanwhile, two C-130s from the Wyoming Air National Guard are flying firefighting missions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and California.
