Mary E. Hook

Mary E. Hook, 98, passed away on January 7, 2013, ten days before her 99th birthday at Rapid City Regional Hospice House, Rapid City, South Dakota.

Mary Elizabeth Roberts Hook was born on January 17, 1914, at the family ranch near Sundance, Wyoming, to William and Nettie (Angel) Roberts. Mary attended school in Sundance, graduating from high school in 1931. After taking 5th year normal at the high school she attended the University of Wyoming for the summer. She taught for several years in rural schools in Weston County, Wyoming.

Mary married Samuel A. Hook on June 15, 1938, in Sheridan, Wyoming. They lived on their ranch at Buckhorn, Wyoming, until 1952 when they purchased another ranch at Nisland, South Dakota. Winter and spring months were spent at the ranch at Nisland and summer and fall months were spent at both ranches.

Mary loved to crochet, sew and made many birthday, wedding and anniversary cakes. She loved to travel and was thrilled when she got to go to all 50 states and many Canadian provinces. Since the death of her husband on May 10, 1986, she has lived with her youngest daughter in Rapid City.

She is survived by daughters, Alberta (Pete) Krush, Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and Rita Hook, Rapid City; three grandsons, Kevin R. Queen, Rapid City, Michael (Joan) Krush, Fargo, North Dakota, and Matthew (Elizabeth Fallon) Krush, Edina, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren, Aidan and Alana Krush, Edina and Gerin Krush, Fargo; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sam Hook; daughter, Roberta Queen; brothers, William, Matthew “Mick” and Don Roberts; sister, Nora Reimer; nieces, Linda Sievert, Debbie Reimer and Kathy Roberts and nephew Michael Roberts.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Rapid City Hospital Hospice House.
