Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Sundance Community Church, family burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Survivors include her children, Siegfried (Connie) Holso of Cody, Wyoming, James Holso of Deadwood, South Dakota, Rosemaria (Melvin) Miller of Sundance; grandchildren, Erica (Will Cummingham) Greba, Robyn (Barry) Weis, Dan (Melissa) Holso, Becky Holso, Bethany Holso and Letha (Mark) Richardson; other great-grandchildren, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Holso; a sister, Lotte Schmid; and a brother, Herman Schmid.
Maria was born on June 26, 1926, in Kirchheim Teck, Germany. She attended business school after graduating from high school. After World War II she moved to Lead, South Dakota, where she married George Holso whom she had met during the war.
Maria was never afraid of hard work. She worked on a small ranch south of Deadwood, where she and George made their home and raised their family; and her work continued throughout her life after moving to Spearfish and later Sundance. Always willing to do for others without any consideration for herself, Maria’s love, kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness were evident to the very end. Knitting and crocheting were a passion she enjoyed until the last few weeks of her life. Many years of gardening gave her enjoyment and the opportunity to watch things grow.
She was proud of her German heritage and would always get excited when she met someone who shared her love of Germany and the language and culture. Maria lived her faith and trust in God on a daily basis. Reading her Bible, personal prayer and regular attendance at church, caring for her husband after his stroke and regular visits to her shut-in sister-in-law were done as a demonstration of her faith and love. She will be forever missed.
