Former land use board member picked to fill vacant seat

A new member of the Sundance City Council was sworn in at March’s regular meeting, Hugh Palmer having recently resigned. Council Member Brad Marchant previously served on the Land Use Planning committee and will be replaced by Callie Hilty.
“I’ve got a long way to go, but I hope I do a good job for the town and for the council and I’m looking forward to serving,” he said.
Mayor Paul Brooks explained that Land Use Planning is used as a training ground for replacement council members as part of a long-standing agreement with Steve Lenz.
“I wanted to use Land Use as a training program for future councils so that, when they do come online, we get somebody who has at least some knowledge of how the town works,” he said.
Though some people may not think that was a good way to go, said the mayor, he pointed to Marchant as an example of its success and said the council has a new member who is already relatively up to speed.
“I still think it’s a good deal and I’m pretty happy with it,” he added.
Ken Rathbun, on behalf of Croell Redi-Mix, requested that the council approve the final subdivision plat for the first phase of its headquarters project. Marchant recused himself from the vote due to potential conflict of interest and the remaining council members voted to approve the plat.
The council also passed a first reading of an ordinance to annex a tract of land on the industrial side of town and dedicate Fuller Road. Mayor Brooks called it a “logical addition” to the city.
The ordinance to vacate a portion of 12th Street located between the school and football field received its second reading. City Attorney Mark Hughes informed the council that, because Sundance is not classified as a first class city, there is no requirement to gather signatures from landowners within 300 feet of the road, as had been previously believed.
