A vigil memory service was Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spearfish, South Dakota. Rosary was recited. Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church. Memorials will be given to St. Onge Community Club, St. Onge Cemetery Fund and Society of Black Hills Pioneers Scholarship fund.

Julia was born December 7, 1929, to William Nicholas and Jeannette Alice (Larive) Kerwin in Deadwood, South Dakota. She grew up on the Kerwin Ranch on Spring Creek near Spearfish. She attended country school starting at five years of age so she could have a classmate. In 1946, Julia graduated from Spearfish High School, as did all of her children.

She married James Alan Kinghorn on June 25, 1947, and lived the rest of her life on their ranch two miles south of St. Onge. To this union seven children were born; they also cared for one foster child, nieces, nephews and other children who wanted to share the ranch experience.

Julia worked various jobs throughout her life including cooking at the St. Onge Sale Barn, Rancher Bar and Café and helping at Cora’s Creations Flower Shop. She raised chickens and sold eggs and fryers to her many customers. She was known as “the egg lady”.

She was known for her cooking talents, especially her raised donuts, cinnamon rolls, pickles, and relish which she enjoyed making and sharing with others.

Her life was very busy because of her compassion and service to her family, neighbors, Alan’s Aunt Sarah, her St. Onge Community and many organizations. She served on the Butte-Lawrence County Fair Board and as secretary of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers. She was a member of St. Onge Community Club, St. Onge Garden Club and Extension Club, as well as a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spearfish. She also enjoyed delivering daffodils for the American Cancer Society.

Julia is survived by her seven children, Judy (Dave) Brewer of Anderson, Missouri, Chris (Jim) Maupin of Hulett, Wyoming, Bill (Teri) Kinghorn of Rapid City, South Dakota, Peggy (Dewey) Turbiville of Sundance, Wyoming, Mary Jo Kinghorn of Scottsdale, Arizona, Ray (Sheila) Kinghorn of St. Onge, Jim (Carol) Kinghorn of Shenandoah, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alan; brother, Martin Kerwin; and great grandson Dalton Brewer.
