Herbertha “Bertie” Johnson, 79, of Gillette, Wyoming, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming, of a heart attack following surgery. She was born Feb. 6, 1934, to Sam and Annie (Marsh) Bears in Buckhorn, Wyoming. She was the third eldest of eight children. Her work as a troubleshooter for a business took her all over the United States. Eventually she settled in Flint, Mich., where she and close friend Sarah Lawrence owned and operated a convenience store. When the elder Bears’ age required them to have a caregiver, she and Miss Lawrence moved back to Wyoming, where they helped her parents and operated a convenience store. Eventually they moved to Gillette, where she attended college classes at Sheridan College. She also earned her Realtor’s license and became an agent for Vicki Saylor. Eventually, ill health forced her to retire. She had a strong personality as well as a defined sense of humor. She courageously faced many health situations that would have daunted other people. She battled multiple sclerosis, heart disease, diabetes, as well as many other health problems. However she continued to enjoy life until the day she died. She loved caring for her beloved dogs as well as visiting with friends and relatives. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Dean of Gillette; brothers, Marshall Bears of Story, Wyoming, Samson Bears of Hulett, Wyoming, and Lewis Bears of Keyhole, Wyoming. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; sister and Miss Lawrence. She is sadly missed by those who knew and loved her. Anyone wishing to honor her memory is encouraged to make donation to any dog rescue organization or a humane society.
