Harlan G. Hanson Jr. 69 of Moorcroft, Wyoming, passed away January 31, 2012 at the Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper, Wyoming, after a long battle with cancer.
Harlan was born in Pierre, South Dakota, to Harlan and Elizabeth Hanson. While in High School he decided to join the US Navy. He was in active duty from January 1960 to June 1963 and in reserves till 1966. He served on an aircraft carrier and was able to travel the world. After serving his country, he decided to try something different. He was headed to Arizona; stopped in Newcastle and stayed in the general area until his death. During these times, his life was full of adventures. He was hired on as a ranch hand and eventually got hired on with an oil company where he worked in the oil fields. He had many business ventures which included owning a cattle ranch; a weed spraying company and a smoke shop in Wright, Wyoming.
He then met Rebecca Iriberry and her family. Even though he never had children of his own, he did have the pleasure of enjoying Rebecca’s two children Jacklynn and Mitchell Iriberry.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harlan G. Hanson Sr. and his mother, Elizabeth B. (Forsythe) Hanson of Pierre and sister Lillian Hanson of Pierre.
Survivors include two sisters, Yvonne Harris of Woodbury, Minnesota, and Nicole O’Malley of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; a brother, William (Elaine) Hanson of Jacksonville, Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2012, at The Vineyard at Pine Haven with Pastor Duke Taber officiating.
Military honors will be performed by the VFW Post 8473 Honor Guard of Moorcroft.
Inurnment will take place at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota.
Arrangements are under the direction of Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis.
