Graveside funeral services for Sonny Nielsen, 75 year old Buffalo, Wyoming, man who passed away suddenly at the Johnson County Health Care Center Thursday afternoon, April 17, 2014, will be held by his family and friends in the Alva Cemetery in Alva, Wyoming, in June of this year on a date to be announced. George Ray Nielsen Jr. was born on March 1, 1939 in Sundance, Wyoming, to George and Mildred Nielsen. He went to country schools in Alva and attended high school in Hulett, Wyoming. After high school he moved to Buffalo where he worked for Frank Prosinski in the Sinclair Station and later as a foreman on a bridge crew building the overpasses on the interstate North of Buffalo. He was married on August 1, 1956, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to Carol Sommers and they made their home in Belle Fourche for a short time before moving back to Buffalo. Sonny worked on constructions jobs in Buffalo for several years and in 1967 they moved to Portland, Oregon where he went to work for J.A. Freeman in a farm equipment warehouse as a supervisor. In 1999 he retired and they moved back to Buffalo where he lived until the time of his death.
Sonny was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding ATV’s. He was a demolition car driver for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife Carol of Buffalo; one son Darryl Nielsen and his wife Vivian of Gresham, Oregon; one daughter Diana Lackey and her husband Michael of Portland, Oregon; one brother Richard Nielsen of Buffalo; one sister Gloria Jolley of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Alice and two sons, Melvin and David.
