Freeze Your Fanny on Super Bowl Sunday

By Sarah Pridgeon

Before you settle in to cheer on the teams at the Super Bowl, why not work up an appetite with a four-mile walk in the snow to raise money for the Sundance Emergency Responders Association? This year’s Freeze Your Fanny race begins and ends in front of the Court House on Cleveland St. and everyone is welcome, whether to enjoy a friendly competition or a brisk walk with friends.

Registration will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on February 3, with those walking for fun starting at any time after 8 a.m. and competitive participants setting off at 9 a.m. Fees are $25 for adults and $15 for walkers aged 12 and under.

Registration includes your entry fee, breakfast and the chance to win door prizes. Pre-registered applicants will also receive a purple Freeze Your Fanny 2013 commemorative t-shirt on the day of the race, with the choice to replace the t-shirt with a hooded sweatshirt for an additional $15.

Race winners will receive either an award of a cash price for first, second and third place, men’s and women’s divisions and possibly by age categories.

A hearty breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. for competitors and spectators alike, offering you the choice to fuel up before you set off or wait until you’ve finished the walk. If you’re planning to be there to cheer on the walkers, you can still enjoy breakfast for just $5.

Proceeds from the event will go to a variety of causes, the first and foremost of which will be assistance for the emergency responders. Past uses have included offsetting the cost of the hundreds of hours of continuing education a first responder requires to maintain their certifications and licenses and helping with loss or displacement.

In the seven years since the Sundance Emergency Responders Association (previously the Sundance EMT Association) began hosting the event, over $7000 has been donated from the proceeds to other persons and organizations in need, partly thanks to the generous donations made by local businesses each year.

Registration checks should be made out to Sundance Emergency Responders Association and mailed along with registration forms to PO Box 1141. Alternatively, the form can be faxed to 307-283-2002 and the fee mailed or brought with you on the day.
