Elizabeth Marie Gose Canfield was born on April 27, 1920, on the family’s “south ranch” near Upton, Wyoming. She was the first born child of Vernie and Mame Thompson Gose and the oldest of eight children. She was also the first grandchild of 60 grandchildren of Nels and Martha Thompson. Elizabeth grew up near Upton and attended and graduated with a normal training degree from Upton High School. Following graduation she taught rural school in Weston and Crook Counties. Elizabeth then worked for Farm Services in Newcastle, Wyoming, the Torrington Telegram in Torrington, Wyoming and the Denver Post in Denver, Colorado. While in Denver she also worked for the Farmers Home Administration. She married Kenneth Canfield on June 11, 1943, in Harrison, Nebraska, when he was home on leave from the Army during World War II. When Kenneth returned in 1945 they moved to their property on Inyan Kara Creek and began ranching with Kenneth’s parents, Willard and Ada Canfield.
In 1951 they purchased the Harry Canfield ranch, an uncle of Kenneth’s, on Inyan Kara Creek and began their own ranching operation that they continued throughout their lives. They ranched as well as owning and operating the Sundance John Deere-GMC-Hesston business. Elizabeth, a lifetime Wyomingite and published author, was a columnist, staff writer and proof reader for the Sundance Times-Wyoming Pioneer for several years.
Elizabeth, also warmly known as “Betsy”, always had time for her family and friends. She formed many relationships on her journey through this life and deeply cared about each one. Her grace and inspiration was a blessing and will be truly missed by so many. She was an accomplished pianist. She loved reading and working with students in the elementary school reading program in Sundance, sharing time with all children, reading and gardening. She was a 4-H leader for many years in Crook County, member of the Inyan Kara Homemakers club, Buffalo Belle Soil Conservation District, and the Bearlodge Writers.
