Edna Melissa Larson, 102, passed away on July 25, 2016 in Rapid City, SD.
Edna was born April 5, 1914 to Alfred E. and Abba A. (Watson) Draper in Putnam County, Missouri. As a young girl Edna traveled with her family to Wyoming, Wisconsin and back to Wyoming, with the family finally settling in Osage, WY. Edna attended grade school in Osage and went to high school in Newcastle, WY. She received her Normal Training in Newcastle, receiving her certificate to teach. Her first school was Star Butte School, where she fought off rattlesnakes. She attended summer school at Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD. She then went on to teach for five years in rural schools and taught four years in Osage, WY.
Edna married Joseph Larson on July 3, 1950. They traveled with Joe’s work to North Dakota, and then settled back in Rapid City. Joe did not want her to work outside the home, but being the independent lady that she was, she started a sewing business from her home. She kept a lot of people in stiches, from curtains to wedding gowns. Edna was very interested in the activities of her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and her friends.
Edna is survived by two daughters, Violet (Paul) Smith and Amylena (Roger) Olson; three grandchildren, Robert Smith, Melissa (Malcolm) Mitchell, and Shelby (Dan) Quilt; five great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren and one sister-in-law. Edna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe, five brothers, and three sisters.
