He was born to Lillie (Speakman) and M. R. Chafee on December 7, 1930, at Sturgis, South Dakota. He attended school in Sturgis and proudly served his country from 1952 to 1954.
During his lifetime, Swede worked in the oil fields, was a finish blade operator, and helped to build many of the highways across South Dakota and Wyoming. He was leased to Sammons Trucking in Montana and drove over the road for many years and in the early stages of the Alaskan pipeline, he was operations manager for K & W Trucking in Fairbanks. He owned Groom Acres Pear Orchard in Zillah, Washington, and later purchased and operated the E-Z-Inn Café. In 1984, he returned to South Dakota and was shop foreman for Meade County Highway Department. In his later years he proudly raised some of the finest Morgan horses in the country at his Magic Meadows Morgan Ranch in the Black Hills. He retired to the beautiful community of Aladdin, where he spent his final days. He was known throughout his lifetime for his ability to fix, build, repair, or create anything.
He leaves behind his wife of 42 years, Donnie; three sons, Michael of Texas, Brandon of Aladdin, and Andy of Illinois; four daughters, Sandy, Linda, LeaAnn, and Trudy, all of Montana; and twelve grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Private services were held at Black Hills National Cemetery on Wednesday, November 13, 2013.
