Dennis Edwards, Sundance, WY, and his five-year-old male, Craig captured second place honors at the 2011 Meeker Classic. Dennis and Craig also received this year’s award for the Best International Shed. Given to modesty, Dennis has make his place among the champions as what he calls “a relative newcomer” to the sheepdog trialing world. He placed in the top 17 of the Open 2011 National Finals after taking second in Meeker.
Dennis has been trialing for about 13 years. He started going to a few small arena trials with encouragement from fellow handler, Gerald Bunney. A couple years later, he started attending a few field trials. One trial that really got him hooked on field trials was the Kaycee Challenge in Kaycee, WY. Dennis first competed in Kaycee in 2008 and won that trial in 2009.
Of his special dogs, Dennis loves them all, but fondly remembers Maggie as the one who was the first dog he had some trial success with. She didn’t run at many field trials, but loved the arena trials. She had a lot of personality and was a joy to have around.
Dennis made his first trip to Meeker in 2008 and would end up taking 2nd three years later. That trip to Meeker was his first introduction to one of the really big field trials. “What an experience it was for me. I was in over my head, but what cool place to run dogs. It also showed me the level I needed to be training my dogs to. That has been quite a challenge.”
Outside of the Dog World, Dennis works for the local electric coop – Powder River Energy Corp, in the metering department. He and his wife Marlene, a registered nurse, have made their home in Sundance and raised two sons, Joshua, who is a Range Specialist for the Forest Service in Mackay, ID and Lucas who is getting his Doctorate in Theology at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO. Dennis and Marlene have seven wonderful grandchildren and are very proud of their family.
We congratulate Dennis on his achievements and wish him all the best for 2012!
