Barbara Byrne is to be honored at this Saturday’s Citizen of the Year banquet. Originally nominated for her work with Boy Scouts and the Red Hat Society, the Chamber of Commerce selected her as this year’s winner to acknowledge the many contributions she has made to the community.

“We’re recognizing her for all the things she’s been involved in, even besides what she was nominated for,” says Trudy Pridgeon, President. “She’s done a lot over the years and all that she’s done for the community deserves recognition.”

Byrne, who has lived in Crook County for over 20 years, is both president and lector of the Council of Catholic Women for St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sundance, as well as the treasurer of Sheridan Deanery Board for the Council of Catholic Women of Northeast Wyoming. She is a volunteer at Crook County Hospice, now called Caring Companions, and a Cub Scout den mother.

Byrne was the founder of the Sundance chapter of the Red Hat Society around ten years ago, an organization dedicated to fun after 50 for women of all walks of life. She is also chairman of the Sundance Quilt Show, now in its eighth year.

As well as her current contributions, Byrne has a long history of dedicating her time to the community. She was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce for a number of years, holding all offices but the presidency and acting as chairman of the Light Parade for three years.

Byrne was treasurer of the Council of County Services and held all offices within the Devils Tower Natural History Association during her eight years as a member. She is a past member of the Board of Directors for Reach 4A Star Riding Academy in Casper, a therapeutic riding center for disabled persons.

Saturday’s banquet will also honor the other nominees for this year’s award, including Rick Proctor, Joyce Speidel and Dick and RoseZella Proctor. The event will begin at 6 p.m. on April 6 at the Aro Restaurant with a welcome reception and will also celebrate hometown business and provide an opportunity for Chamber members to mingle and share ideas for the coming year.

Tickets for the banquet are $25 and can be purchased at the Aro Restaurant, At the Twisted Pine Gallery, Best Western, Dillons Hardware, Impressions Embroidery, Subway and Sundance State Bank.
