Cookies for heroes

Girl Scout Troop 1989 made a special trip around town last week bearing boxes of cookies for heroes of the community. This year, the girls nominated Crook County Memorial Hospital staff and residents and the Crook County Sheriff's Office as the recipients of their collection of cookies. As the girls have sold the popular treats this season, they have offered the opportunity to also donate towards the cause. They combined the cookie-giving trip with a community service: picking up...

Through the looking glass

Sarah Pridgeon

For the first time since the StoryWalk® first graced the Sundance walking paths, its contents don't tell a single story. Instead, each frame will display a photograph of a piece of fusion glass artwork and the unique story behind it. The pieces were created by students of Sundance High School under the tutelage of art teacher Tobi Miller-Ayer. Depending on the complexity of the project a student has chosen, she says, they can take as little as a month or as much as a semester to complete....

Peek at the Past

100 Years Ago April 18, 1924 Highest Water Known: the Belle Fourche river reached a new high mark Wednesday of last week when it was three feet higher than ever known, caused by five days of rising flood from melting snows on the headwaters. From that time the water receded fast, but the city of Belle Fourche had suffered damage of approximately $100,000. Nearly 100 residences were destroyed and much other damage resulted to bridges, fair grounds and merchandise stock. The farm loss in Belle...

Color run!

Cassie Snook

Last Thursday, April 11, brought a splash of color to Sundance Elementary School's usual mile run for students. Coach Williamson, supported by the Boylan Family and the Parent Involvement Committee, transformed the mandatory exercise into a fun activity – marking SES's first Color Run. Excitement filled the halls as students wore white shirts in anticipation of the colorful event. At 2 p.m., parents gathered outside to watch their children's enthusiastic participation, while schoolmates...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon

Somewhere in the north of England, not too long ago, a good Samaritan stumbled across a creature in need. We’ll never know the identity of our well-meaning citizen because it’s been redacted for the privacy I am sure they will be grateful for now this story has come to light. But we do know all about the good they did that day. Our tale takes place in Cheshire, and I would like to imagine it began in a sunlit glade, deep in the picturesque woods, with spring leaves rustling in the morning...

  • Karl Henrik Frederiksen

Karl Henrik Frederiksen was born January 8, 1930 to Johan and Martha (Pedersen) Frederiksen in Horton, Wyoming. Karl joined his loving wife of 71 years in Heaven on April 9, 2024 with his family by his side. Karl's education was cut short after the eighth grade because he was needed at home to help provide for his family and run the farm. On June 1, 1952, Karl married the most beautiful girl in Crook County, Iris (Joan) Dudrey, at the Methodist Church in Sundance, Wyoming. They were the first...
