He was born on November 29, 1934, to Perry and Gladys (Dickinson) Roberts on their homestead in Hulett. He attended Hulett School and went on to join the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged to help his parents after his father was injured.
On June 1, 1956, Don married Betty Hower. He worked for Crook County Road and Bridge then took over the family ranch. He founded Hulett L.P. Gas and was known throughout the county for his tough right hook, winning smile, and willingness to always lend a helping hand.
Don was elected Crook County Commissioner in 1996. He was chosen as a member of the Wyoming Selective Service Board and served on the Hulett Lions Club and American Legion. He was a founding board member of Hulett National Bank and Hulett Airport Board. He was one of ten charter members of the Hulett Flying Club.
Don had many passions. One of which was his love for flying. He took great joy in his time flying and later helping his son-in-law, Kevin, achieve his private pilot’s license. He had proven himself as an excellent partner for dancing and a skilled roller skater. Many students in the area were lucky enough to also have him as a substitute bus driver, known for giving candy and soda during those long bus rides. Family was the most important thing to Don. He would stand up for any family member and cherished the times he spent with them, especially with his grandchildren. He was a generous man and a pillar of the Hulett community.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Kevin Sweeney; son, Ronald Roberts; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Dianne Roberts; four grandchildren, Holly Weiss and husband Jason Weiss, Brooke Sweeney, JD Roberts and Alisha Roberts; two great grandsons, Jason and Gavin Weiss; two sisters, Helen and Frank Ridinger, Diana and Donald Anderson; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Gladys Roberts.
