Cole Tank becoming increasingly unstable
By Sarah Pridgeon
The new zoning ordinance for the City of Sundance returned to the council’s attention this month and smoothly passed its first reading. A meeting had been held between council meetings at which “verbage was smoothed out,” said Mayor Paul Brooks.
No significant issues with the zoning ordinance were brought up before it was approved. Council Member April Gill asked for the phrase “required yard” to be better defined but said, “Otherwise, I thought it looked great.”
The council also clarified parts of the revised snow removal and parking ordinance, which received its second reading during the meeting. “When a person gets a contractor’s license for removing snow and are asked for three references, can one of those be their mother?” asked Council Member Hugh Palmer.
Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz enlightened the room with the specifics: references should be from past jobs but can be personal if an applicant hasn’t done any.
Public Works Director Larry Schommer mentioned that he had also heard of rumors that a contractor’s license will cost $2000. Lenz confirmed that a license in fact costs $110 and can be renewed half price if applied for by March 1; the council agreed to discuss the fee and early renewal cost in greater detail when fees are next scheduled.
Schommer then described several ongoing problems with the relocation of the Cole Water Storage Tank. Wyoming Water Development is considering whether to solicit an alternative geotechnical company because the estimate came in higher than expected, he said, and a problem has been discovered with the foundation of the new site.
Engineering America, the company responsible for moving the tank, is unable to handle the type of construction that would be required to level the new site, he explained, because it would involve eight feet of concrete on one side. Drilling is to take place to find out how deep the limestone deposit at the site is to both confirm its stability and the likelihood of landslides.
