He attended Black Hills State University and the University of Wyoming, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. He later attended the University of South Dakota earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Jeff married Barbara A. Waldo on June 8, 1962. Jeff worked on the family ranch, worked in the oil fields, farmed, and held various cowboy jobs before taking a job with the U.S. Forrest Service. Following retirement he worked for the Crook County Museum. Jeff married Emmy Del Agua on March 2, 2009, in the Philippines; he first got to know her by telephone conversations in 2008. They spent many hours communicating on the phone and through letters. Jeff went to meet Emmy for the first time on February 16, 2009. He returned to the Philippines in March of 2010 and he and Emmy returned to the United States on April 7, 2010. The couple made their home in rural Sundance. When the couple was in the Philippines, Jeff enjoyed the beauty of the country, the culture, the food and especially the rain. He loved spending time with Emmy’s mother, who recently passed away and also with her five sisters and two brothers. He and his love, Emmy, shared a special dream of returning to the Philippines and buying a rice farm.
Jeff was a member of Future Farmers of America, 4-H and Alcoholics Anonymous. He was an avid reader, especially westerns, he was a baseball fan, and he even played top-notch, semi-pro baseball. Jeff was a history buff, especially Native American history. He enjoyed arrowhead hunting, hunting and fishing, driving around sightseeing; the Bearlodge Mountains was a favorite place for Jeff to go. Jeff never met a stranger and always had a story to tell and cherished the time he spent drinking coffee with his friends.
