After two years of work and fundraising, Crook County Fire Fighters Auxiliary proudly presents its brand new catering trailer to the community, designed and built to feed first responders during emergencies. The public is warmly invited to its maiden culinary voyage on June 24 at Devils Tower KOA.
The 27-foot trailer was built to cater for somewhere between 100 and 200 first responders – the exact number will be determined when the kitchen is first used, says CCFFA Chairman Suzette Moline.
The cooking range was donated by Campbell County Fire Department and much of the labor was completed courtesy of K&K Customs of Belle Fourche, who, says Moline, worked on the trailer for four months without charging for the labor and were instrumental in researching to ensure the kitchen was built to standard or beyond.
The mobile kitchen was partly funded through grant money raised by Jim Pridgeon of Crook County EMS, who initially donated the trailer itself, and partly through fundraising and donations and the CCFFA. Worth approximately $100,000, the trailer cost just $65,000 to complete.
The mobile kitchen will serve Crook County as first priority but, when not in use, can also be leased out for a predetermined fee to surrounding counties, the state and FEMA.
The kitchen’s kick-off event at the Devils Tower KOA will begin at 4 p.m. on June 24, as the Old Settler’s picnic draws to a close, with food available from 5 p.m. – the team will continue to feed people until the kitchen runs dry, says Moline.
The event is a fundraising effort as well as an unveiling, with the CCFFA hoping to raise $3000 for the final touches required on the trailer. As well as entry steps for the catering staff, the mobile kitchen still needs to be stocked with pots, pans and other commercial cooking equipment.
Adult meals will be available for $10, kids’ meals for $5 and children under 10 can eat for free. The public is invited to bring desserts and the event will be accompanied by live music from performers including Brandon Ackerman, Todd Kahler, Doug Ren and Brock Finn.
